HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDS

A number of books, periodicals and articles have been helpful as references in recording the events of the times. Synopsis of History, a folder issued by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston gives an excellent chronological chart of the ancient world. The Customs of Mankind by Lillian Eichler Watson, A Handy Book of Curious Information by William Shepard Walsh and A History of Industry by Ellen Louise Osgood have been useful, the first for the customs of the past, and the latter one for the development of industry and its effect upon society.

Historical and political events that have influenced the customs of the times have been found in A Short History of the Ancient World by Charles Edward Smith, The World of the Middle Ages by John L. La Monte, A Survey of European Civilization by Wallace K. Ferguson and Geoffrey Bruun, The Growth of Western Civilization by A. E. R. Boak, Albert Hyma, and P. W. Slosson, and American Political and Social History by Harold Underwood Faulkner.

Numerous magazines present aspects of daily living, a helpful one being Weekly World News Digest. References to historical, economic, and cultural events of other years have been obtained from various sources, such as Annual of The Americana, Book of the Year of The Encyclopaedia Britannica, An Encyclopedia of World History by William H. Langer, A Dictionary of Contemporaries, and Who Was Whom by Miriam Allen de Ford, Historical Tables by S. H. Steinberg, Famous First Facts, and More First Facts by Joseph Nathan Kane, Dictionary of Dates by Helen Rex Keller, and The Collectors Reference Books of Dates by Percy Jackson Higgs.

Many books are available in which reference is made to activities of women in the history of the world, namely: Womankind in Western Europe by Thomas R. Beard, Womans Place in Industry and Labor Organization. a chapter by Sophie Yudelson, in Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Vol. XXIV, A Comparison of the Political and Civil Rights of Men and Women in the United States, a booklet published by the Government Printing Office, A Short History of Women by Sir John Langdon-Davies, Women from Bondage to Freedom by Ruby Husted Bell, Sumptuary Legislation and Personal Regulation in England, a chapter by Elizabeth Baldwin, in Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science, Vol. XLIV, and Womankind in Western Europe by Thomas Wright.
