Introduction
Some wise old sage once remarked that there never had been a movie sequel as good as the original, which I suspect is correct. That same sage, however, continued by suggesting that there never had been a book sequel that was as good as the original. I certainly hope that isn't true because this book is a sequel of sorts since it is my second entertaining dictionary dealing with country language.
The language used by country folks is actually a lot more than just an accumulation of words. Country talk is pictures set to words. If I said it is very cold outside, that would be a milk toast sort of language. But, if I said it was so cold outside that my teeth were chattering and they were in a glass on the dresser, then you would get a strange image of an impossible situation but you would also know it was, indeed, very cold outside.
I've been collecting the colloquialisms and unique sayings that are so common to country people since I was about ten years old, and that was more years ago than I care to remember. Every time I heard a saying I dutifully wrote it down in a small notebook to preserve it and save it for another day. Through the years my collection has grown considerably, but there was also a problem growing right along with it.
As a native Texan, I've spent all my life rattling around the Lone Star State. I roamed from the Panhandle to the Gulf coast and from East to West Texas and back again. About the only time I was ever out of Texas was during a period when I thought corporate America was for me, which it wasn't. Whenever business took me to Boston or Chicago or Los Angeles, I always made it a point not to stay any longer than absolutely necessary.
Because of such limited horizons, I naturally assumed that the language of Texas was totally unique. After all, I didn't have much to compare it to because I was never in any other place long enough to really get to know the people and learn how they talked. That assumption eventually got me into trouble.
