The American Management Association is a natural meeting place for leaders and managers looking for solutions. The knowledge gathered here has many sources, and I would like to thank our developers, the staff and faculty who over the years pulled the content together into incredibly powerful courses, and the participants who make our experiential learning courses unique. Its their contributions that make our courses increasingly effective learning experiences and the content of this book so insightful.
I would also like to thank those involved with the production of the book, including the writer, Maryann Karinch, who carefully worked her way through a number of AMA programs and distilled their essence in this book, and my editor, Christina Parisi, who helped with the selection of the content and the overall direction of the text. Christina has been an outstanding editor at AMACOM for many years and proved with this project that she has remarkable diplomacy and tact as well. I also want to thank Andy Ambraziejus, the managing editor, who gets things done on time and with flawless execution. I now know firsthand why he is such a favorite with our long list of talented authors. And I would also like to thank the copyeditor, Karen Brogno, who has been improving the grammar, spelling and punctuation of AMACOM books for years.
Management and business are as much art as they are science. Our efficacy as leaders and managers is influenced by the people and experiences we have encountered along the way. Id like to thank a few of the people who have helped define my personal leadership over the years. Dr. Eugene McCoy, who was for many years the head of the management department at St. Francis College and who taught me the value of teaching management skills in context. Don Fruehling, my boss in one capacity or another for most of my career at McGraw-Hill. He gave me the opportunity to grow and experience a broad range of business functions. The late Ted Ammon, founder and chairman of Big Flower Press, who taught me the value of risk tolerance and the importance of the capital formation structure in the United States and how essential it is to the growth of our economy.
During my years at AMA, I have benefited from a dedicated and talented Board of Trustees. They in turn have been led by the remarkable chairs Bill Slate, Terry McCaslin and Charlie Craig, who have been so supportive of me, the AMA staff, and our faculty. And they have always remained closely focused on AMAs mission.
For the past fifteen years, my executive assistant, Barbara Cashin, has proved over and over the importance of having at least one member of a team who possesses excellent organizational skills.
Finally my wife and partner in my career, Sue, who has managed the development of our family with world-class results and on many occasions helped me see through business problems with uncommon clarity.
For the past ninety years, the American Management Association has been devoted to the development of managers and leaders throughout their careers. During that time, literally millions of managers and leaders around the world have benefited from AMAs carefully developed seminars, workshops, and books produced by the outstanding faculty and authors who come together to form the backbone of AMAs ability to help people grow in their professional skills.
AMA currently teaches over 160 different seminar topics, covering much of the management landscape. We provide hundreds of webinars, webcasts, podcasts, newsletters, and of course books, which add to the richness of the information available to help managers develop their skills and become more effective. We customize hundreds of individual programs for companies around the world, which ties our insight, experience, and content directly to their business circumstances and helps the entire enterprise move toward a more efficient, effective performance.
This is an important time in the evolution of the business community in the U. S. and around the world. Economic challenges brought about by the financial collapse in 2008 have caused a great deal of disruption that will have a lasting effect for many years to come.
Now, more than ever, we need to relearn and revisit the basics and finetune our skills. We face circumstances that require virtually flawless execution, and we hope you will look to AMA and all of its resources as the perfect place to help you revitalize your own skills and those of your organization.
