Acknowledgments
This book is the result of the commitment of many individuals who together focused on the goal of creating a business finance book that explains the subject in unpretentious terms. More than anyone, though, this book could not have been written without the skills and expertise of our resident math and finance whiz, Ian Mahaney.
We'd like to thank Ian for devoting his time to writing a book that will be an asset for businesspeople and others who need to brush up on math and financial skills. For those of us who worked on this project with Ian, we can say that ned!

Introduction Finance Is Easy to Learn
Page 10
Most people who were never finance or economics majors in college (which is the majority of us) can't address the challenge of learning business finance without the sarcastic, "Finance, it would take me years to learn that. Besides, the accounting department takes care of that!" But finance isn't that difficult to learn. In fact, it's a subject where the basics can be mastered fairly easily. Four chapters of Business Finance for the Numerically Challenged will do just that. You'll learn the elements of business finance, such as the purpose of a balance sheet, how it relates to the cash that flows through a firm, and how to budget the firm based on cash flow.
Chapter 1 addresses math, an essential factor when dealing with the accounting or sales of any firm. The math review presents necessary math that you probably learned long ago, but have since forgotten during the many years when calculators have been around. Calculators are a great means to an end when used properly, but your knowledge of basic math can never be replaced by a machine. These basic math skills that will

be developed can be applied to many fields and will be applied to the financial reporting that follows in Chapters 2 through 5.
