Thanks Again!
Ive often said that writing books is a little like making babies (and I speak from experience in both departments, though at this point in my life, my books comfortably outnumber my babies and trust me, will continue to). You conceive (in my experience, making babies generally outrates making books here), youre pregnant, you expend a lot of energy, lose a lot of sleep, and finally you deliver (hopefully, on time).
And you cant do either one on your own. Fortunately, Ive never had to try. From day (and book) one, Ive had the support of more amazing people than I can count and, certainly, more people than I can list. Which always makes writing these acknowledgments particularly challenging, but especially important. So thanks a million to:
My husband and partner (in every sense of the word, including the really good ones), Erik, for always being there for me (even in places Im pretty sure he doesnt want to be). And this book around, for being an ever-willing (if not ever-eager, especially where ginger was concerned) recipe tastereven when it meant swilling mocktails when hed rather be sipping cocktails, or going yet another round with those blueberry pancakes. And to those full-grown babies of ours, Emma and Wyattwho now tower over me (and lord that over me): I love you guys.
To Sharon Mazel, the best writing partner and friend a girl could havewho eats, breathes, and (when she has the chance, which isnt often) sleeps What to Expect, and still somehow manages to don her Supermom cape and fly off to Mommy & Me class and car pool. Youre half of our one-two, and I love you. To the girls, Daniella, Arianne, Kira, and especially Sophia (who provided endless inspirationand waves of nauseaduring her perfectly timed stay in Sharons uterus), and who were unwitting but cooperative guinea pigs when it came to recipe testing. And to their ever-patient doctor father, Jay, for always being on call when we needed medical questions answered, and for never begrudging Sharon those sixteen-hour days (I hope).
To Suzanne Rafer, my editor-for-life (or does it just seem that way, Suz?) and friend forever, for your support, good humor, and endless efforts on behalf of everything What to Expectand to her daughter, Zo, for giving Eating Well a whirl while nurturing Suzannes first grandchild(!). To Peter Workman, for being such a gifted publisher.
To everyone else at Workman who lent a hand (or two) this book around. To Lisa Hollander, who has the eye of an artist and the patience of a saint (she certainly needed both this time!); to Judith Cheng, for successfully bringing our beautiful cover mom into the twenty-first century; to Judy Francis for her always illustrious illustrations. To Anne Cherry and Barbara Peragine, for making sure the copy flowed and fit. Beth Doty and Robyn Schwartz, for keeping the What to Expect ship running smoothlyand for not running screaming when they see re: another update in my e-mails. To all my friends at Workman, including Suzie Bolotin, Jenny Mandel, Kim Cox Hicks, David Schiller, Saundra Pearson, Beth Svinarich, Pat Upton, and Lily Tilton. And thanks to everyone, especially Jim Eber and Kate Tyler, who have moved onbut will always be in my heart.
To Rena Coyle, our wonderful recipe consultant, for her dedication to all things delicious, for her fabulous recipe contributions, and for being a super sport about those endless e-mails and qs.
To Alan Nevins, of The Firm, for always going that extra mile (and then some), for your incomparable support and wise guidance, and for always being so much fun to hang out with (well always have La Brigada). To Marc Chamlin, for taking such good care of me, and more important, for caring so much about meyoure my friend and my lawyer, and thats an unlikely combination! To Lisa Bernstein, not only for making the What to Expect Foundation a reality, but for your friendship (and as always to Zoe, Oh-That-Teddy, and Dan Dubno). And to Ken Knabkefor always being Ken-do (and for tasting even when the tasting got tough).
To Victor Shargai and John Aniello, for your love and support. To Howard Eisenberg, my adorable dad, and to Sandee Hathaway, my beautiful (and strictly organic) sister. And to my cherished in-laws, Abby and Norman Murkoff, for always believing in me (though not always listening to me).
To Arlene Eisenberg, for everything youve given me, and continue to give to me every day. Your legacy lives on; youll always be loved and never forgotten.
To ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), for being champions of women and babies, and to all of the doctors, mid-wives, nurses, and nurse practitioners who work every day to make pregnancy safer and happier for expectant couples. Most of all, to my readersthe inspiration for everything that I do, and the reason why I keep doing it and doing it and doing it.
Thanks again, everybody!
Heidi
