Dedication
We dedicate this book to our well-wishers who always encourage us in achieving higher goal and motivate us writing this type of book for Pharmacy education and research.
It is our prime intention to cover the chapters of this series as comprehensively as possible. Thus, we are very pleased to introduce this volume focusing on pharmaceutical drug delivery systems and vehicles. And, as with most technological developments, they have all encountered a vast array of difficulties, ranging from problems in the synthesis of the carriers and drug conjugates to unfavourable pharmacokinetics and toxicity. Furthermore, lack of knowledge on the anatomical and physiological barriers in the body hampered application. The present volume is in several respects unique. It provides a map of the body from the viewpoint of drug targeting/drug delivery systems. We are extremely grateful to all the contributors in this book, who have given up encouragement to write all the selected chapters of pharmaceutics and drug delivery systems in order to create imagination in the mind of M.Pharma students and PhD scholars. Preparing this book took longer than anticipated, and it contains more pages than expected. This present book should prove to be useful to pharma students studying in the pharmaceutics or pharmaceutical technology specialization and could help to develop their career in the field of pharma industries as Formulation R&D scientists, technicians and mangers. I would like to think that this book might fit any of the above description, depending on the readers need. I heartily thankful to my beloved research guide and author Prof. M.E. Bhanoji Rao and my beloved teacher Prof. Chinam Niranjan Patra of their constant and keen involvement in compilation, edition as well as creation of flow charts and figures of few selected chapters during writing of this book. Finally, I would like to thank my loving wife Linarani Swain for her love, understanding and constant support during the time of preparation of this book especially pharma students. I would like to thank my loving son Priyans Swain for giving me some time to make this book.

There are very few text books covering most of the advanced aspects of novel drug delivery systems and vehicles. A need for such a book written in a simple, direct, lucid and relevant language was appropriately realized. The combined efforts of Dr. Swain, Prof. Rao and Prof. Patro have resulted in a faithful publication of this book covering major area related to new formulation techniques, development of novel drug delivery systems and application of drug delivery vehicles in academic and industrial pharmaceutical research labs. The subject matter is written with adequate practical tips and theoretical background and presented in a simple manner for better understanding among the B.Pharm, M.Pharm and PhD research scholars. I hope that you as a reader, whether you are a student, teacher in India or abroad, researcher, academicians would be pleased for this book, which should certainly add to your current knowledge, understanding and insights of theoretical and practical concepts.
It is a matter of immense pleasure for me to write a foreword for this book. I wish the editor and co-editors and all the contributing authors a great success in this combined venture and hope that their contribution to pharmaceutics or pharmaceutical sciences literature will contribute endlessly.
The chief-editor of this text book, Dr. Suryakanta Swain, is a well-established scientist with extensive academic teaching and research knowledge in the field of pharmaceutics. Dr. Swain has been doing research in pharmaceutical drug delivery systems and vehicles for last 8 years, and has patented and published peer-review journals, articles of research & review, invited editorials, thematic issues, international books and book chapters.
