Everyone is talking about ketogenic diets now, and for good reasona low-carb, high-fat nutritional approach is a highly effective way to lower blood sugar and insulin levels, reduce inflammation, increase energy, stabilize mood, and so much more. But far too many people are trying to go keto without shifting the focus of their diet to real, whole foods. Thats what Real Food Keto attempts to educate readers about, explaining the reasons why whole foods are a critical element in optimizing your pursuit of nutritional ketosis.

Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Christine Moore has teamed up with her husband, health podcaster and international bestselling ketogenic book author Jimmy Moore (Keto Clarity, The Ketogenic Cookbook, and The Keto Cure), to help you apply the principles of nutritional therapy to a healthy low-carb lifestyle. Most people think that going on a ketogenic diet will fix all their health and weight woes, but this book explains that sometimes it takes a little fine-tuning in your diet and supplementation to get the desired results.

FOREWORD

We are currently in the midst of a healthcare crisis of almost unimaginable proportions! To some degree, almost everyone is acutely aware of the crisis in the ways it affects us collectively as a society and the ways it touches our lives individually. However, from a societal perspective, we dont talk about healthcare, which is a problem. Oh, we talk about sickness care and how we individually and collectively pay for it, but thats not the only issue. The much deeper and more profound question is, Why are so many people so sick? Or maybe an even better way to put it is, Why arent people healthy? As Jimmy and Christine Moore point out in this book, Real Food Keto, health is not just the absence of disease or infirmity; its a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. More and more of us have diagnosable health problems, but the bigger problem is that very few people are actually living a healthy life!

Ive developed a concept that I like to call the Hallway of Life and the - photo 2

Ive developed a concept that I like to call the Hallway of Life and the Nightmare of Yet. The Hallway of Life is a continuum that goes from absolute, perfect health to death. Youre reading this book about improving your diet and health, so you very likely know that youre not at a state of perfect health. (By the way, youre not alone; no one is in that state of perfection.) We all exist somewhere in this hallway, and were all heading in one direction or the othertoward perfect health or sickness and death.

Along this hallway are markers that help us gauge where we are. The first marker for most of us is a symptom (or symptoms, in some cases). Many of us believe that if we dont have symptoms, then were healthy. Thats not exactly true. The human body is extremely adaptable, and long before we have symptoms, we have wandered away from perfect health. The mistaken assumption is that having a few symptomssuch as headaches, fatigue, minor allergies, heartburn, or poor sleepare just part of life, and we need to put up with it. Maybe we take an over-the-counter medication to relieve the symptom, or, if were more holistically minded, maybe we use a medicinal herb. Theres nothing wrong with that, right? Wrong!

Every symptom you have is your bodys way of telling you that youre doing something wrong, and you need to change whatever it is in your environment thats causing the occurrence of the symptombe it your diet or your lifestyle. Taking aspirin might make your headache go away in the short term, but it wont address the reason you have a headache. Taking an antacid might make your heartburn go away temporarily, but it will not address why you have heartburn. When you cover up these symptoms without ever addressing the cause, they almost always get worse and worse. Your symptoms will likely become more worrisome or acute until you go to see a medical doctor. And that brings us to the next marker in our Hallway of Lifethe diagnosis. In its most fundamental terms, medicine is the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Within each of us is a fear that well eventually get Itsome horrible disease that will ruin our lives. For some of us, its heart disease; for others, its cancer. More and more, were learning to fear dementia as many of us are diagnosed at younger and younger ages with Alzheimers or other forms of cognitive decline. When we seek medical care, its important to realize that many doctors are not trained to make you healthy (although there are now some notable exceptions who are doing things differently). Theyre trained to diagnose and treat disease.

The good news is that doctors are very good at coming up with a diagnosis. They can tell you if you have It already, and thats a good thing because they have a lot of tools to keep It from killing you. For example, if you have heart disease, doctors can do open-heart surgery, put in stents, or give you powerful drugs to keep you from dying. If you have cancer, doctors can give you chemotherapeutic agents, radiation, or surgery. These are all good things because life is sacred, and I appreciate that modern medicine can save my life and the lives of the people I love. But what modern medicine cant do is make you healthy again. Thats just not what most doctors are trained to do. If you get Alzheimers disease, good luck; at this point, they can do next to nothing to help you with it.

So thats what we all need to understand: You dont go to the doctor to get healthy. You go to find out if you have It happening already. If you do have It, youd better pray that you have good insurance because having It in the United States of America is very expensive, and sometimes the cure is as bad as the disease. Which brings me to the second part of my concept: the Nightmare of Yet! What is the It that you fear? And, do you have It yet?

But there is good news. Wherever you are in the Hallway of Life, you get to choose which direction youre headed. In our culture, weve been taught to believe that life is a journey that brings us from a healthy place to a place where we develop symptoms, get sick, receive a diagnosis, and undergo treatment to keep us alive. In this book, Jimmy and Christine Moore show you that you can turn around and go the other way from most points in the Hallway! You can be healthier tomorrow than you are today, and you can be healthier next year than you are this year. Jimmy and Christine are living proof of that truth!

One important concept that Jimmy and Christine discuss is epigenetics. Although genes change very slowly, the way genes are expressed through these mechanisms (or epigenetics) can change very rapidly. And once changes happen, they can be passed down and exaggerated from generation to generation. So, when we dont take care of ourselves, were also affecting the health of our unborn children and the generations that follow. Dr. Francis Pottenger, Jr. demonstrated this phenomenon in his famous cat studies (which Jimmy and Christine explain in Real Food Keto). A significant part of our current health crisis is the result of diets that have relied heavily on highly processed foods that we have been eating for several generations. From an epigenetics point of view, we have collectively dug ourselves into a deep hole with the unconscionable amount of sugar and highly processed carbohydrates we feed our children, and its time to start digging our way out!
