CHAPTER
INTRODUCTION
I dont believe in coincidence. Everything happens for a reason, including why you and I have come together through the medium of this text. I hope you will take a moment and think about how you came to be holding this book in your hand. Youve probably been searching, and maybe even praying, for answers. Picking up this copy of The Keto Cure is your first and most powerful step to changing your life.
JIMMY SAYS
Committing yourself to a permanent lifestyle change can be incredibly challenging when youve tried and failed so many times before. But the good news about what we share in this book is that everything you will read within these pages is based on practical information that is grounded in the latest nutritional health science and is being used daily by many physicians in clinical practice around the world. Once you get the basic tenets of keto nailed down, optimal health will logically follow.
Improving your health, and your life, is not something you can do occasionally. Health is a lifestyle, a mindset, and a cause that moves you to action. This book was written for people just like you. It is designed as a guide to help you understand the basic principles that enhance your metabolism. Weve known about these foundational principles for more than 100 years, but theyve become clouded and gray. Applying these principles will help you achieve a healthy weight and dramatically improve your overall health. The six principles of the ketogenic approach laid out in this book are metabolically essential to reversing the causes of the diseases of civilization.
But what are these diseases of civilization? They are diseases that either didnt exist or occurred rarely until our cultures became more civilized. They include heart disease, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, pre-diabetes, impaired fasting glucose, hypoglycemia, kidney stones, gout, psoriasis, eczema, inflammatory diseasesincluding arthritis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)and autoimmune disorders such as hypothyroidism. These diseases, the ones that keep me in business, werent problematic when people lived in smaller villages and tribes. They began to rear their ugly heads when our societies began to incorporate civilized eating and the mass production of foods that contained higher quantities of starches, sugars, and carbohydrates. When you follow a ketogenic lifestyle, you return to the kinds of eating habits that humans living in those smaller, less industrialized societies had. Consequently, your body can reverse the progression of the diseases of civilization and return to a healthier state.
Is the ketogenic lifestyle just a Paleolithic approach? No. Its a lifestyle that revolves around the use and cooking of natural, whole foods, with an emphasis on those foods that have positive hormonal effects on disease at a cellular and genetic level. The ketogenic lifestyle is an intentional way of eating wherein you restrict carbohydrates, moderate protein, and use fat as your primary fuel.
WHO I AM
Why do we need another book about ketosis and ketogenic diets? Many other wonderful authors have written books on the topic. I have bookshelves full of them. What makes me special enough to write another? You may even be wondering, Why do you call yourself DocMuscles? Are you bragging about your physique?
Im not particularly special, but I do have more than seventeen years of personal and professional experience with the ways that eating habits can affect how you look and feel. Although I am proud of keeping myself healthy today, I havent always been healthy. In fact, after medical school and residency training, even though I exercised an hour a day, restricted my food intake to 1,200 to 1,800 calories per day, and limited fat in my diet, I was 65 pounds overweight, always tired, very moody, and pre-diabetic. I spent so much time in the gym trying to maintain my health that my trainer said, If you keep this up, Doc, youll become the doctor of muscles. (A friend heard this and started calling me DocMuscles. The nickname stuck.) My problem, as you also might have experienced, is that no matter how much I exercised, I couldnt outrun or outlift the wrong diet.
I come from a family with a strong history of insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke, to name just a few medical issues. Ive tried vegetarian diets, calorie-restricted diets, and all the fad diets in between. Nothing worked for me.
I found the same problem in my patients. A few had found success with rigorous exercise and calorie restriction, but the rest of them (myself included) plateaued at around 20 pounds of weight loss; were left with ravenous hunger, moodiness, and fatigue; and saw no improvement in blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes numbers. In fact, these numbers often worsened with calorie restriction, and the patient would end up being prescribed yet another pill a few months later.
I saw this pattern repeatedly throughout my residency and the first five years of private practice, and its disheartening to the physician and discouraging for the patient. In fact, it is so discouraging that most patients begin to lose trust in their doctors competence and advice. Patients get the impression that we doctors enjoy dispensing pills. I dont know a single physician who doesnt truly want to help his or her patients succeed. However, giving out dietary advice that doesnt work leads our patients to believe that we intentionally try to keep them unhealthy just to prescribe them more medication.
JIMMY SAYS
My name is Jimmy Moore, and I am the international bestselling author of Keto Clarity, which was designed to be an entry-level book for understanding nutritional ketosis. Like Dr. Nally, I too struggled with weight and health issues and watched family members deal with morbid obesity, cardiovascular disease, and more. Embracing a keto lifestyle prevented me from following my brother Kevin into an early grave at the age of 41 and will help me buck the trend of chronic disease for years to come. Ill be popping up in the margins throughout the book to add further thoughts and translate complex ideas that Dr. Nally shares. He likes to get nerdy sometimes!
