These studies focus on the foundation of the food pyramid that has been taught in school since the late 1950s and led us to believe is a balanced diet.
The ketogenic diet was originally developed by Dr. Russell Wilder at the Mayo Clinic in 1924. It was proven to be very effective in treating epilepsy in children that did not respond to medication. Chapter 1. What is the ketogenic Diet?
My Story
My story began a couple years ago after a series of health scares that forced me to take a better look at my horrible diet and unhealthy habits. I started my weight loss journey in 2014 in hopes of improving my health and overall well-being.
My blood pressure was elevated, and I started having issues with sudden plain in my feet and blurred vision. What truly terrified me was that I started having the same symptoms my father had before he was diagnosed with Diabetes. So I started paying more attention to the foods I ate, slowly changing my diet.
In the beginning, I cut out the obvious unhealthy junk foods and started eating REAL food. I ditched the canned and instant meals and starting cooking my own with fresh vegetables and lean meats instead. While my diet was better and I removed most of the harmful foods, I still gave into my cravings and ate chocolate or chips occasional throughout the week.
Within six months, I noticed a big change and wanted to learn more about eating healthy and which foods can make a difference in your health. I soon found out that healthy eating is the exact opposite of what mainstream medicine and the federal government were saying.
I then discovered that the whole-grain, low-fat, high-carb diet that was highly encouraged by the USDA was actually making people sick, not making them live longer and better. I also learned that saturated fat and cholesterol was not the evil culprit that causes heart disease and damage to our health.
While I was making changes to my new healthy habits, I soon realized that the less sugar and bread I ate, the better I felt. After expressing my enthusiasm to a friend, it was when she mentioned the ketogenic diet. Immediately, I started doing research and tried it. After the first month on the ketogenic diet, I stuck to 20 carbohydrates a day, and then worked my way up to about 30 then 50 carbohydrates a day. I lost 20 pounds and felt better than ever, even without any exercise.
Within a week or two, the weight loss stopped as I stuck to an average 50 carbs per day. I started losing motivation and questioning how effective the keto diet really was. Following the plan completely, I even dropped my calorie intake to 1300 a day in hopes of losing more weight. This became very discouraging when Id look 5 pounds and gain 2 more back.
However, I noticed a significantly large improve to my health while losing some weight. So I stuck with it. At some point I realized that whole-grain products made me feel terrible, so I decided to cut out grains from my diet. While I didnt lose any weight with this diet change, I did notice my energy levels were increases, my skin looked amazing and I felt overall super healthy.
During my struggles to be healthy, eat better and lose weight, I became convinced that a normal weight and great health that the best results anyone could ask for.
Thats my story. I hope this helps you in your own personal journey. If you are struggling with health or weight issues, please know that you can and WILL succeed, if you stick to this plan and make the necessary changes. It may seem quite difficult at first but you will soon adapt to a new way of living, and eating will become easier.
