Chapter 1: Ketogenic Diet
If you are thinking of starting on a low-carb diet, you may have heard of ketogenic diet. Ketogenic diet, also known in many other different terms such as keto diet, low-carb high-fat diet, nutritional ketosis, or simply low-carb diet, is composed mainly of fats and proteins, and was initially devised as a special diet for people with epilepsy and other seizure disorders. This type of diet basically works to allow ones body to achieve the state of optimal ketosis, a state when the body has high fat-burning rate. Studies have shown that staying in ketosis makes it easier for individuals to lose weight. And as part of a weight loss program, ketogenic diet is now popularly used worldwide especially by bodybuilders.
Ketogenic Diet: Where It All Started
The ketogenic diet has been in existence since the ancient Greeks and was popularly used to treat epilepsy. A treatise entitled On the Sacred Disease, written during this time, revealed that this dietary therapy has a basis. This treatise provides a particular example of a man who was cured of epilepsy by completely abstaining from food and drink. However, it was not until 1911 in France when the very first modern study about this dietary plan was conducted. Since then, many studies from different parts of the world, including the United States, have been undertaken to prove the effectiveness of the diet.
The introduction of new anticonvulsant drugs, however, sparked interests among patients with epilepsy and started to use these drugs instead of adopting the diet. This resulted in an evident decline in the popularity of the diet. Through the years, however, studies and surveys about these drugs were continuously conducted, with statistics showing 20-30% of patients getting no improvement despite trying out different anticonvulsant drugs. With these significant statistics, many have again resort to adopting the ketogenic diet. Its popularity has once again soared, so now comes the modern era of ketogenic diet, this time not just for treatment of epilepsy, but also as part of a weight loss program. Aside from these, there is also emerging evidence stating that this type of diet can be beneficial for cancer and neurological diseases such as Parkinsons disease.
Ketogenic Diet: What Is It
So what exactly is ketogenic diet?
In order to achieve optimal ketosis, the body consumes more fat, instead of sugar, for energy, which is possible by increasing fat and at the same time restricting carbohydrates, something that the ketogenic diet can do. The amount of insulin in the body must also be low to boost the production of ketones. A well-controlled, sufficiently huge amount of ketones in the blood basically means low insulin in the body, which of course means that the ketogenic diet is working.
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat diet that basically works on three principles: carbohydrates are kept in a low amount, protein is kept moderate, and fats are increased. With this diet, your body has more stored fats even if you are lean. The diet is often followed for four to six weeks. A good indication that the diet is working and effective is when you feel cheerful and energetic, even though you have not taken any food for hours.
With this diet, you have to eat mostly fatty foods, while bread, fruits, vegetables, and other protein-rich food should be taken in a restricted amount. Typically, a ketogenic diet should provide you with 4 grams of fat for every gram of protein and carbohydrate. With this diet, your intake of food should be carefully measured to achieve the desired results. Importantly, the diet should be strictly followed as even a slight withdrawal can have a huge effect on the body. Meat like beef, pork and lamb, fish and shellfish, poultry products like chicken and turkey, eggs, cheese, and green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and cauliflower are examples of food items that consist a ketogenic diet.
Ketogenic Diet: Measuring the Effects
As mentioned earlier, achieving the state of optimal ketosis is a great indication that the diet is working. Ketones coming out of your breath is a good sign, as well as in your sweat and urine. Theres also a self-testing product called Ketostix, which tests the amount of ketones in your body. First, the strip is in neutral color, and then slowly turns to pale pink, then deep purple, which indicates the presence of ketones. The darker the color of the strip, the more ketones in the body. As part of a weight loss program, the effect of ketogenic diet can be very evident, especially on the first 2-3 weeks of ketogenic diet. You will notice a significant drop in your weight. Also, the ketogenic diet is known to have a diuretic effect, which means that this diet plan can help flush out excess water in the body.
