Introduction
This is a beginners guide starting with the equipment youll need, setting up your equipment, lighting the torch and on to brazing.
Here the emphasis is on brazing steel to steel in the range of 1/16th to 3/16th thickness. With a little practice you can begin building your own sculptures using brazing as the joining process.
Ive taught many people to braze so Im well aware of the questions you may have. Along the way Ill add some TIPS that will speed you on your way.
Sit back, relax and begin imagining all the amazing things that you can create through brazing.
With the Oxy/Ace torch you can:
Braze
Silver Solder
Gas Weld
Heat for Forming and Bending
Tempering
Copper Annealing
Flame Coloring Copper
Cut Steel
Before we go any further, le me just jump in here with a YouTube video which shows the basics. Once you've watched this video you will have a better idea of the process of brazing. This will make what follows easier to grasp.
Video:
Brazing is the process of joining two or more metals together using a bronze filler rod.
An example of a basic application is heating two pieces of steel to dull red hot and melting a bronze filler rod between the two pieces. If the braze is done properly it will produce a strong joint. A brazed joint is much stronger than solder but not quite as strong as gas welding.
For the type of sculptures that I do, the strength of brazing is more than adequate.
For over forty years Ive made my living designing, crafting and selling metal sculpture. The most used tool in my shop is the oxygen acetylene torch. Although I also Mig weld, most of my work is done with the torch.
In my opinion the oxygen acetylene torch is the most versatile of all welding equipment.
The Equipment
The Gases - Oxygen & Acetylene
Acetylene is a gas. It is one of the hottest of all natural gases. When ignited it produces a flame. The addition of oxygen increases the temperature of the acetylene flame.
What do you need to braze?
Oxygen and Acetylene
Oxygen Acetylene Torch
Oxygen Acetylene Regulators
Oxygen Acetylene Hoses
Sparker
Tip Cleaner
Dark Brazing Glasses
Flux covered Bronze Filler Rod or bare bronze brazing rod.
The Oxygen Acetylene Torch Outfit
This is a Victor Performer Oxygen Acetylene Torch Outfit
Performer is the model name.
Inside the box :
The Torch Handle
The Regulators
The Cutting Attachment
1 brazing / welding tip.
Also included with this outfit are the Oxy/Ace hoses.
Note: the Oxygen hose and regulator are GREEN.
The Acetylene hose and regulator are RED.
There are three well established names in Oxygen Acetylene Torch Outfits:
Victor - Harris - Smith
Your local welding supply company will probably carry one of these three brands.
I have always used Victor, although Harris and Smith Oxy/Ace outfits are equally as good.

The regulators fitted to the oxygen acetylene cylinders .
Regulators are just what the name indicates: They regulate the flow of oxygen and acetylene from the cylinders to the torch.
The Oxygen Acetylene Cylinders.
The cylinders are available at your local welding supply.
As you can see the cylinders are available in various sizes.
A common question is: "How much brazing can I do with a particular sized set of cylinders"? There is no answer to this question. It all depends on what you are brazing, the size of torch and tip you are using and the regulator settings.
Each individuals use of the oxygen acetylene torch is going to be different.
You might want to start with one of the smaller sized sets of cylinders. When the cylinders are empty they are exchanged for a set of cylinders that have been refilled.
The content of the cylinders (Oxy/Ace) is measured in cubic feet. The larger the cylinder the less per cubic foot the cost of the contents. Just as in. the more you buy the less it costs.
If you find yourself returning the cylinders for exchange too often, you will want to consider larger cylinders.
Check with your welding supply for information on safely transporting oxy/ace cylinders.
Welding Brazing Tips.
The 000 is the smallest and the #3 is the largest.
I mostly work with the 0 & 00 sizes tips.
Depending on the type of work that you plan to do there are larger torches and larger tips available .

Accessories
Pictured are the accessories that you will need.
Dark Brazing Glasses
A sparker (for lighting the torch)
Cylinder and Torch Wrench
Tip Cleaner
Additional Brazing Tips
For brazing I prefer dark brazing glasses vs. goggles.
Purchasing Your Oxy/Ace Torch Outfit.
If you are new to Oxy/Ace brazing I recommend buying a new torch outfit. We all like to get a good deal, but buying a used outfit is a poor way to start.
