First and foremost I want to thank Sharyn Kolberg, who was not only patient but also maintained a sense of humor. This book would not be possible without her commitment, hard work, and flexibility. I would also like to thank Lara Asher for her invaluable support as editor and patient advisor. Thank you to Laura Yorke at the Carol Mann Agency for helping Oz and me to get this dream done and to Nancy Geary for teaching me what it takes to write a book. And thanks to Oz for being Oz.

Adaptive immunity: This type of immunity involves lymphocytes, white blood cells that allow the body to recognize previous invaders and help destroy them. This is how vaccination works. Particular antigens (any foreign substance, such as a bacterium or virus, that stimulates an immune response in the body) are introduced to the body in small amounts. This signals the body to make antibodies (infection-fighting protein molecules) that are designed specifically to fight any future invasions of that particular antigen.
