1/ UNDERSTANDING SEARCH ENGINES

Search engines have special softwarerobots, often called crawlers, whose main job is to locate and build a list ofwords they find in the websites they go through. The crawlers usually startfrom popular web pages and heavily used servers, and follow all the links thereto spread all over the web.

When search engine crawlers like Googles Googlebot visits a webpage, they usually record2 sets of vital information from the page:

  1. Individual words within the page and how frequent are their occurrences, and
  2. Where the words are located in the page HTML.

Words that occur in the title tag, othermeta tags, and in other special places in the page convey their relativeimportance in that page. They are noted by the crawler and the concerned pageis later considered for listing following a search query for one or more ofthose relevant words.

Remember that in order to have yourwebsites pages crawled, they must be found. This means that at least onepage in your website must be linked from another web page that has already beencrawled and therefore known to the search engine.
