Introduction iii Introduction The story of the historic buildings and those - photo 5

Introduction
The story of the historic buildings and those who lived in them
in old Halifax has been told before by others who concern
themselves with history, heritage, and architecture.Yet in 2016
it is still possible to add something new to those stories, in the
ever-evolving downtown landscape that is old Halifax.
One needs only to look back to 1988 and the block on
Barrington Street that held the Saint Marys Young Mens
Total Abstinence and Benevolent Society, the City Club, the
Church of England Institute, Tip Top Tailors, and the Tramway
Building to see the ever-evolving transformation. The Saint
Marys building is currently being rebuilt with only the faade
remaining; the City Club has already been renovated and
assumed a new role with Neptune Theatre; while the Church
of England Institute is on the road to being repurposed. The
little cubist Tip Top Tailors building no longer exists, but in its
place is an entirely new building. Then the Tramway Building,
minus its turrets, has been purchased and awaits its fate.
My goal is to tell you the story of these transformations and
to give each of you an opportunity to walk these streets with
this convenient guide in hand, whether you are an experienced
Haligonianoravisitorinterestedinhistoryandurbandevelopment.
This is the city where many of us live or work, and what
happens in this place is vital to each of us, as well as to our
families and friends. It is also hoped that it will prove to be
of special interest to visitors, who live in other places that are
also changing. Did we get it right? Did we choose our civic
politicians, planners, developers, architects, and builders with
enough care? What will the many visitors take home to add to
their understanding of this historic city, as well as of their own
streetscapes? We must continue to be interested, to be curious,
so that Halifax will continue to be the city we all love.

on individual buildings, the obvious monuments from the past,
attention began to include groupings of buildings: streetscapes,
districts, and in many cases entire towns. When taken together,
these groupings of buildings create a unique and compelling sense
ofplace,afabricwhichmaybeofaparticularstyleorera,orwhich
may include many diverse building types, styles, and ranges of
expression spanning decades or longer. The streets of downtown
Halifax form such a rich and diverse collection of buildings. The
American architectural historian, Roy Eugene Graham, who was
influential in the establishment of Lunenburg as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, commented on walking Barrington Street in
Halifax that it was a catalogue of buildings. It includes examples
of architectural styles and building types from the earliest days of
Halifaxto the present. It isnowHalifaxsfirst heritage district
Barrington Street is also one of the Halifax streets examined in this
broadly-focused, well-researched, sharp-eyed, and charmingly written
book. It discusses the buildings and streetscapes of the prominent
streets in downtown Halifax in rich architectural and historical detail.
It is unique and deserves credit among the many fine previously
published books on the architecture of Halifax for looking beyond
individual buildings, styles, eras, and types to examine diverse
groupings of buildings on multiple streetscapes. The reader will
find a perceptive and illuminating description of the modern and
popular new Halifax Central Library, as well as discussions of the
