Introduction
If someone tells me something is haunted, scary, spooky, creepy, or strange, I am hooked! Im notsure why. It may have to do with my upbringing. I grew up in theSouth Carolina Lowcountry, which is full of Lowcountry Voodoo (morecommonly known as Hoodoo), legends and lore, cemetery tours, andhaints like Boo Hags and Bugaloos. My great aunts used to tell methe best ghost stories. I never tired of hearing about oldplantations, lighthouses, cemeteries, and forts that were hauntedby the likes of Civil War soldiers, lighthouse keepers, and spiritsseeking lost love or retribution.
Ultimately, I wrote a book about the bestghost stories of my region, Ghosts of the Carolina Coasts. It is now in its eleventh printing. I wish I could take credit forit, but that rightfully goes to the ghosts found throughout thesepages and beyond.
Part of the process of writing this kind ofbook is participating in ghost investigations (both officially andunofficially) and researching the history and hauntings of eachplace. Sometimes you just have to guess why a spirit lingers amongthe living. Other times, you have a lot more documentation to goby. But in the end, much is speculation and hearsay since witnessesare no longer alive or prove hard to locate for an interview.
But the mystery and inability to prove ordisprove the supernatural is what makes these stories socompelling. Wouldnt you agree?
So read on if you want to find out why youdont want to park in front of El Campo Santo Cemetery. Learn aboutthe Phantom Mourners at Greenwood Cemetery, as well as theGreenwood Bride and some spooky Ghost Lights. If you end up nearResurrection Cemetery and see a female hitchhiker, be sure to stopor else you may face the wrath of Resurrection Mary.
A whole book has been written about the WhiteLady of Union Cemeteryand it was written by renowned demonologistEd Warren, who happened to photograph her on more than oneoccasion.
But Union Cemetery does not deserve any moreattention than Chestnut Hill Cemetery, which has been haunted by avampire for more than 125 years. Or is this merely a fascinatingand frightening legend?
Some of these cemeteries can be exploredthrough a variety of interesting tour options, such as on a Segwayor aboard a Tomb Buggy Tour. During this unique tour throughHollywood Forever Cemetery, you may spot celebrity spirits lurkingamong their graves and giant mausoleums.
Or you may have a chance to party withghostsif you dare. Learn where the biggest Halloween graveyardgathering is held every year and why it always ends beforemidnight.
Or maybe you will catch a glimpse of the veryreal but mysterious black-clad figure that visits Edgar Allen Poesgrave every year. Even if you dont see the Poe Toaster, the touris worthwhile as it includes the incredibly creepy catacombs ofWestminster Hall & Burying Ground. Keep your eyes openthroughout this part of the tour as you may see the ghost of Poehimself.
One of my favorite stories involves a phantomfarmhouse that appears and disappears right in front of your eyesat Bachelors Grove Cemetery.
I also remain intrigued by the VoodooPriestess, who roams St. Louis Cemetery #1 and also by LittleGracie of Bonaventure Cemetery.
One of the most haunted cemeteries dates backto the Salem Witch Trials. It also happens to be among our oldestand is located in one of the most haunted cities in AmericaSalem,Massachusetts.
But no cemetery has more reported paranormalactivity than Gettysburg National Military Park Cemetery. Duringthis epic three-day battle of the greatest war fought on Americansoil, the Battle of Gettysburg, many were mortally wounded.Thousands of men died during this battle or from injuries sufferedduring it. These were young men, many not even twenty years old,who surrendered their livesnot for fame or glory, but forfreedom.
So turn the page and keep reading if you wantto learn more about the ghosts that linger among the graves andcrypts of the most haunted cemeteries in America.
Pass the Cemetery
Shadows dance across grave chilledstones
Stones shone white in rising lit moon
Moon storm shade thrill spirits
Among all marble dead that stay
