Introduction

David

Coyote is my power animal, an ally. He assists me in this world and the next. Your ally may not be Coyote. Ummin fact yours may be Chimpanzee.

In 1976 I began having strange dreams in which my deceased grandfather came to me and began telling me stories. He was teaching me lessons handed down to him from the Native American side of my family. One medium advised me to keep a journal. I needed to write down everything I remembered when I awoke each morning. She said my grandfather was preparing me to enter the spiritual life of my ancestors.

Later that summer, I moved from Mississippi, where I had emancipated myself from the Air Force, and relocated to Hawthorne, Florida. At the time, I began to study aspects of the paranormal from both a scientific and a metaphysical point of view. I found myself working in a shop for a man named Henry Lokison. Henry always considered himself to be a sorcerer. We would spend many days talking about the mysteries of magic and power. He introduced me to the writings of Carlos Castaneda. Though some people claim it was all a fabrication, I found truth and wisdom in the writings, in many cases some of the situations resembled stories from my grandfather. Armed with this confirmation of knowledge, I continued to practice the lessons I had been taught by my spiritual grandfather.

In the summer of 1978, I spent time in the Dakotas, searching for my identity. It was during this journey of self-discovery that I met a medicine man called Black Eagle or Wanblee Sapa, although it was Black Eagle who actually found me. Throughout the course of that summer I never left his side. He said he had talked to my grandfather and that he would bring everything together for me. Connect the dots, so to speak. I would go on a spirit journey, and I would get a native name.

By the time I left I was a fledgling medicine man, practicing Coyote Medicine, living in a world of wonder that simple words cannot explain. I began what was called the quest for knowledge. Black Eagle said that in the quest for knowledge you need to be persistent as a dog with two dicks. Though I thought that was funny at the time, I now know what he meant.

There are four steps on the path of knowledge.

The first step is the decision to become a medicine man. To do this requires many things, with the primary portion being an apprenticeship of sorts. During the course of the apprenticeship, the pupil changes his or her entire perception. After apprentices change their views about themselves and the world, they take the second step.

They become warriors. A warrior is a being of utmost discipline with control over himself. He learns to have unbending intent. It is by this unbending intent that the warrior unlocks the secrets of manipulating the world around him.

The third step, after acquiring forbearance and timing, the warrior becomes a medicine man.

When medicine men learn to see, they have taken the fourth step and become a seer. Seeing is not an affair to be accomplished by using the eyes; it is accomplished by using the heart.

Black Eagle warned me that once I embarked on this journey I could never turn back. He told me I would have to learn or be destroyed by the path.
