Preface
If you have some knowledge of the Bible, or would like to learn something about it, this book invites you to a game of multiple choice. A statement based on the Scriptures is begun and is completed by four different endings.

Only one of the endings is correct. Which one? A Biblical scholar will probably have no difficulty in selecting the right ending for virtually every one of the 1,437 statements presented here. Those who are fairly well acquainted with the Bible will no doubt pick the correct ending in the majority of cases. Others presumably will have more difficulty. But even one who is not at all acquainted with the Scriptures will find in these statements so much that is familiar he may well score better than he might expect. Bible tests have hitherto consisted of a series of questions, sometimes to be answered by yes or no, sometimes requiring a rather detailed reply.

But questions piled one upon another tend to become wearisome. Also, there is not much fun in searching ones memory repeatedly. To test our powers of recognition, on the other hand, rather than our powers of recall, can become an enjoyable pastime in which the reader matches wits with the author. Therefore, the three incorrect endings have usually been worded with an eye to making them seem as plausible as possible. Sometimes these false endings are merely passages lifted from nearby Scripture verses. More often they are pure fabrication.

This test had its origin in the writers realization that he had been harboring a vast number of misconceptions and garbled memories of a book he thought he had absorbed so freely in his youth. Some of these misconceptions suggested incorrect yet plausible endings to statements based on the Scriptures. Error is not always a promising base from which to evoke truth, but discovery of error proved in this instance to have a certain stimulative value. All of the statements and the correct endings, as well as some of the incorrect endings, are either based on or quoted directly from the King James Version of the Bible. When reference to a Bible dictionary was needed, A Dictionary of the Bible by John D. Davis was used.

This multiple-choice test could not have been produced without the editorial and research assistance provided by Mrs. Carolyn S. Scott. She has contributed immeasurably to the final product. CARL S.
