The idea that the Hakluyt Society should re-edit the Sucesos of Morga was put forward by Professor C. R. Boxer, to whom I am obliged for the suggestion, as well as for the use of his library, and for his many helpful comments and criticisms during the preparation of this new edition. I am also grateful for help from many others, including Mr Ifor B. Powell, University College, Cardiff; Dr Carlos Quirino; Professor Nicholas Zafra; Dr J. L. Phelan; as well as the late Dr R. A. Skelton. I also wish to record the many kindnesses of the late Father Honorio Muoz OP, who allowed me to work in the archive of Santo Domingo Priory, Quezon City, Philippines, and who did everything possible to facilitate my researches there. I am particularly indebted to Dr Leoncio Lopez-Rizal for his encouragement, for his generosity in allowing me to work on his own collection of manuscripts, and for his hospitality while I did so. Fr Nicholas Cushner, SJ, took a continued interest in the editing of the text, read my Introduction, and gave unstinting help when we were working together in the Archive of the Indies in Seville, and in the Jesuit archives in San Cugat del Valls, Barcelona, to which I was admitted through his kindness. Professor K. Enoki of the Toyo Bunko in Tokyo supplied me with a bibliographical reference. Professor M. L. Daz Trechuelo gave me the photograph of the Morga portrait which the Osuna Institute granted me permission to reproduce.
A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled me to spend a year working in Asia, mostly in the Philippines, in 1964-5. I am grateful to the secretaries of the Hakluyt Society, Professor Eila Campbell and Dr T. E. Armstrong, for help in editorial matters, and to Mr John Pisani who undertook the burden of preparing the index and shared the chore of proof-reading.
