Foreword
Col. Norman Vaughan has crammed enough high adventure into his mere eighty-four years to sap the adrenalin of a battalion of lifetimes. What's more, he's still doing it.
As I write this, he's in Greenland, engaged in salvaging two B-17s and six P-38s, which crashed in 1942. Just prior to that he drove dogs for the twelfth time over Alaska's grueling 1,158-mile Iditarod Trail. As perhaps might be expected, his elapsed time hardly challenged that of the winner. After all, the colonel, ever a gentleman, would be loath to barge rudely ahead of a young woman, his junior by half a century.
Though it's been forty years since I ran dogs on a high-country trapline along the Iditarod, I can well recall the challenge of doing so and find it incredible that someone almost old enough to be my father could have made it to the first race checkpoint, much less to Front Street in Nome.
Not that I'm not pretty rugged myself. For example, when I was a kid I could beat most men twice my age at wrist wrestling. And by George, you know, I still can. But I wouldn't want to challenge the colonel. No siree. Whether we're talking sinew or spirit, Norman Vaughan is second to no one.
He and I have too seldom crossed trails, but each time we have done so, I've gleaned nuggets of imagination, incentive, and inspiration: gifts that enliven this book, about an epic antarctic adventure he had back when I was a stripling. For his enduring generosity and zest for life I am both grateful and envious. In fact, when I finally grow up, I hope I'm just like him.
