INTRODUCTION
IM SO GLAD YOURE HERE! If you have meal-prepped, attempted to meal-prep, or thought about meal prep before, youre in the right place. Ive been teaching others my formula for meal prep and meal planning for over ten years in workshops and small groups, and Ive also had (and still have) the pleasure of working with clients one-on-one as a nutrition coach. The one takeaway Ive discovered from all my coaching is how valuable meal prep and planning is. Over the years, I have found that meal preparation is the most underutilized strategy for healthy eating. Period. If what you desire is real change, its critical that you pay attention to the food you consume. Once you learn how to prepare them in easy, healthy, and convenient ways, you will wonder why you waited so long to incorporate this simple routine. Beyond the health benefits of meal prep, after just one week of doing it, my clients have raved about how its changed everything for them, and how accomplished they feel at the end of a meal-prep session, when neatly placing their food-filled containers into the fridge. They also have said how great it is to grab their prepped food for work every day without spending time, effort, or energy on having to think about what to make or spend money on healthy takeout.
It has taken me years of prepping for myself and my family to create a system that works for the long term. My system is easy to follow, and anyone can do it. WHAT IS MEAL PREP?
Simply put, meal prep, or food prep, is preparing several meals all at once through the acts of shopping, washing, cutting, cooking, and packaging. This practice has been around for a long time. In the past, food prep and batch cooking were most commonly seen in large families; they had no other choice but to prepare large quantities of food to ensure there was something for everyone to eat. Maybe this is what you think about when you hear the words meal prep. More recently, meal prep has become popular in fitness and bodybuilding circles, where athletes haul around precisely portioned containers of food, consuming a certain number of calories a day to ensure peak performance. But for the purpose of this book, meal prep is the go-to method for people just like you and me, looking to live a healthier and more organized lifestyle.
Whether youre interested in cooking for yourself, your significant other, or your entire family, adopting my meal-prep system is doable and life-changing. I know the term life-changing gets thrown around a lot. Recently, I was shopping, and the salesperson said, This cable-knit sweater is life-changing. Really? I dont know about that, but what I do know is this: once you start meal prepping, your entire life will change for the better. The benefits of the simple act of meal preparation will trickle down into other parts of your life too.
WHY MEAL-PREP?
From my experience, most people explore the world of meal prep to experience the health benefits it provides. This is certainly what will happen once you incorporate my routine, but its actually the unexpected benefits that amaze most people and what I love hearing about:
You will regain hours in your day. I cannot emphasize this enough. Youll have more time each day to do the things you never had time to do. Youll have more time to relax, to learn something new, or fit in another healthy habit like daily exercise or meditation.
You will eliminate the need to multitask as you prepare lunch or dinner.
Youll be more present with the people around you. For those of you with children at home, that means no more bouncing back and forth between the kitchen and family room, watching the stove and helping with homework at the same time.
Picture the beginning of your day. Think about what it will be like to wake up each morning knowing your tasty and healthy breakfast is already waiting for you. Say goodbye to those frantic mornings of running out of your house, fighting traffic, and racing against the clock as you try to squeeze in a drive-through run for something to eat. The money and time youll save each morning will add up quickly. The best part of my coaching is when these unexpected benefits accumulate for my clients. We end up planning the ways they are going to use the money and time theyve savedanything from a date night to purchasing some new clothes to fit your slimmer waistline.
As much as meal prep is about getting organized and taking control of your overall health, the physical changes that are experienced are just as rewarding. When I hear my clients talk about the compliments and accolades they receive from their coworkers and friends because of their increased energy and weight loss, I cant help but join in their excitement. The best part of meal prepping is that you get to direct it, by using my strategy and making it your own. Some people prep a weeks worth of food in one day, while others organize two mini preps for a few days at a time. No matter which method you choose, food prepping is all about routine. And once you practice this new routine, it will become second nature to you. Youll develop an important healthy habit that will serve you for years to come.
