Foreword

It is a great pleasure and honor for me to write the foreword for this unique, definitive, and innovative volume on sports-related eye injury. I would like to thank Professor Yan for taking on the exciting challenge of inviting a group of world-renowned experts to contribute to this important book which examines the newest advances in the field of special eye injury.

Professor Yan is the President of the Tianjin Medical University, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Professor of Tianjin Medical University, Member of the Medical Commission of the Association of National Olympic Committee, Vice President of the Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society, President of the China Ocular Trauma Society, and Executive Committeeman of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society. His contributions have been vital to the study of ocular trauma for decades, and he has published over 200 book chapters, journal papers, and conference papers. He has also published a series of ocular trauma books with Springer Publishing, includingMechanical Ocular Trauma,Anatomy and Examination of Ocular Trauma,Atlas of Ocular Trauma, andOcular Emergency. The volumeOcular Emergencywon the most outstanding book in 2019 published by Springer. Additionally, Professor Yan works on the proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), a vision-threatening complication and one of the largest challenges for ocular trauma; in this work he seeks to discover the essential mechanisms resulting in PVR, aiming to reduce or delay the occurrence or recurrence of PVR via blocking the main factors of trauma.

Ocular trauma has been reported as the third largest cause for vision loss worldwide, and it is the leading cause for monocular blindness universally. Since personal wellness attracts more attention from the general public in recent years, people participate in a variety of fitness activities and sports beyond the realm of professional athletes. Unlike other parts of the body protected by clothes, the eyes are more vulnerable to injury due to inadequate eye protection; hence, amateur sports-related eye injury is becoming more and more common, and this calls for adequate and serious assessment and treatment from the medical community.

The book ofSports-Related Eye Injuriesis thus quite timely. Accurate and immediate diagnosis and quick, effective treatment or surgery are key factors for doctors and clinicians to save the eyes and visual function. To provide the most comprehensive information, the editors clearly introduce the basic knowledge of sports-related eye injury including the classification, risk, and mechanism of ocular trauma. Beyond this, typical case presentations with detailed clinical workups and accompanying illustrations are provided to offer a comprehensive review of pathogenesis, clinical findings, treatment options, and prognosis of sports-related injuries in different parts of the eyes. In addition, various controversial treatments of sports-related eye injury are clearly discussed. Finally, protective applications and devices, a guideline for Return-to-Play, and recommended screening of sports-related eye injury will be helpful for the clinicians and the participants to reassess the risks of sports and, to an extent, avoid eye injury.

The editors have produced this high-quality book after decades of tireless contributions to the medical research development of sports-related eye injury. The book will be a vital and invaluable resource for doctors and clinicians to help them provide the utmost care to patients and save the vision of even the most extreme injury victims. This volume will most certainly insure that more and more clinicians and professionals working in sports medicine can contribute vitally to the universal prevention and rehabilitation of sports-related eye injury.
