Preface
Google has been known as the command line of the Internet. Anyone can go to Google.com and do a basic search and find almost anything theyre looking for. Did you know that the real power of Google comes from using search operators and not very obvious features that allow you to refine your searches even more. Google also has many hidden features and Easter eggs that you have to learn about to know how to be able to take advantage of them.
This book was created to provide a quick reference to all of Googles advanced search features and services. It demonstrates how to refine your search to take full advantage of the power of this websites features. It also reveals how to make your searches more accurate.
Be aware that the company seems to be on a never ending quest to make itself more useful so that people will keep coming back to use its products and services. Theyre constantly changing how things work by adding and removing features and services.
Introduction
Search Engines on the Internet have become the 'GPS' equivalent of how everyone finds and navigates the content and services on the Web that we use every day. Without search engines, the web would not be as successful as it is today, and a great number of entrepreneurs and investors would be a great deal poorer.
The original ways people searched the Internet in the mid-1990s were very crude by modern standards. Originally, you had directories like Yahoo that were human-curated (which later ditched this service). Then you also had the early search engines like Alta Vista (and many others).
Google came on to the scene around 1998 and changed everything by providing fast and more accurate search results. These distinctions set it apart from its competition.

One of the technologies that the company developed is called 'PageRank', which ranks webpages depending on how many sites are linked to them. It was also based on the quality of these links. For example, a link from a popular news site would be considered higher quality than a link from some random site. This is an oversimplified explanation, and it's only one of many variables Google uses to determine what appears at the top of your returned search results.
Google is constantly reinventing itself and trying to stay innovative. They are constantly experimenting with new technologies and services, they are also retiring current and older ones just as fast.
The example below shows how Google has evolved its user interface over the years. The first image shows Google in 1998 and the second image shows what it looks like today.

Because theyre constantly reinventing themselves and changing their service offering I will be updating and adding to this book on an annual basis so you can learn the latest tips, tricks, and secrets. I constantly demonstrate these tricks to my family, friends and work colleagues, and they constantly tell me how they didnt know most of the tricks that I demonstrate in this book.
