CHAPTER ONE
OVERVIEW OF WINDOWS 10
Whats New in Windows 10?
The latest update of Windows 10 combines features from those two previous installments to suit the users in a better way for both laptop and desktop computers as well as mobile devices.
The most prominent change in Windows 10 is that Microsoft swapped the Start screen tiles from Windows 8, and brought back the Start Menu. They also removed the vertical toolbars that appeared from the sides of the screen. These changes make this Windows version user-friendly on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. A brief preview of the new features of windows 10 are analyzed as follows:
Return of Start menu
This is what Windows 8 critics have been demanding, and Microsoft has finally brought it back. Now, when you click on the Start button at the bottom-most left of the screen, you get two panels abreast, with the left column showing pinned, recently and most-used apps while the right panel shows the tiles.
The Start menu in Windows 10 allows quick access to apps and programs, along with the ability to quickly search for content.
Also, you get a power button at the top for power options such as Shutdown, Hibernate, and Standby. At the same time, the right column features a selection of live tiles that you can customize, resize and reorganize. As if thats not enough, the search field at the bottom search-related Internet results in addition to programs and files.
Cortana on Desktop
Cortana is Microsoft's digital assistant whose task is to aid you to get things done. Life just got a lot easier with Windows 10 as it brings Microsoft's voice-controlled digital assistant Cortana to desktop computers.
This will make it easier for you to interrelate with your device without lifting a limb. You will be able to perform many tasks such as searching your hard drive for a specific file, dig up photos from specific dates, or launch PowerPoint presentations just by telling your PC to do so. This Cortana feature makes multi-tasking much easier.
Xbox App Support
The new operating system will support Xbox game streaming with enhanced speed and graphics performance. The app also permits you to record, edit and share your victories with the Game DVR feature. You'll also be able to join your friends in games across Windows 10 or the Xbox platforms, and see their activities through Xbox Live.
Project Spartan Browser
Project Spartan is the name for a Web browser introduced in Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system that the company created to eventually replace Internet Explorer Web browser. New features include PDF support, a reading mode that improves the layout of long articles, and a new note-taking feature. In addition, Project Spartan will feature Cortana support within the browser, so she can pull contextual information from the sites you're on to do things you command.
Improved Multitasking
Windows 10 comes with a new Multiple Desktops feature which allows you to run another set of windows as if on another screen. This helps you manage your assembly of open windows and apps. Instead of having several windows open on top of each other on one desktop, you can set up a whole other cybernetic desktop for those programs to reside in. With the new desktops comes a new way to keep track of your open apps on Windows 10.
It's not much different from using the Alt-Tab combination shortcut on your keyboard, but this presents a suitable way for touch-oriented users to get an overview of what's running.
Universal Apps Feature
Microsoft has introduced a new category of software called Universal Apps. This bundles Photos, Videos, Music, Maps, Messaging and Mail & Calendar.
For example, Photos will pull your images across your PC and mobile devices and organize, enhance and sync them through OneDrive. The system even spots duplicate and saves just one copy of the same image, and can automatically create albums for you.
Continuum
Continuum allows users to toggle between keyboard and touchscreen interfaces on devices that offer both. Continuum automatically detects the presence of a keyboard and positions the interface to match.
With the increasing rate of hybrid laptop-tablet devices, Microsoft wants to make it easier to switch between either mode. The system will automatically detect if you've connected a keyboard or mouse and switch modes for more convenient communication. This feature permits you to use your phone as a PC, you can connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse or use your phone screen as your virtual trackpad and keyboard.
Action Centre
Windows 10 now provides a new way to look at all your notifications in one place. The Action Center is invented to replace the Charms menu that slides in from the right on Windows 8 devices. It receives alerts from all apps on your device. Depending on the app, you can also react from this panel itself, with each notification expanding to display more actions. The Action Center also provides a fast way to toggle connections options and other such settings.
Installation of Windows 10
You can easily install the new Windows 10 on your computer by upgrading from your previous Windows version or installing Windows 10 afresh (clean install) on your computer system.
