PREFACE
Though an ocean of information is available to read, listen and watch, for many years, I failed to find a comprehensive book where I could get almost all the critical elements of effective communication and the proven ways to improve, that too in an easy and understandable language. I found that this vacuum needed to be filled up by a book that will address the need to understand and learn most aspects of effective communicationin particular, for non-native English speakers.
Thus, I started the quest and thought of bringing the vital elements of communication together. I attempted to write a brief article on those lines, which fortunately found a place in a widely circulated monthly magazine in Qatar in early 2020. Thanks to the Gulf Times, most people who read that article applauded and requested to write more on those elements. That was the trigger, and here I am.
You are about to read a book where you will find real-life examples and case studies from skilful and knowledgeable people, learn quickly from these examples; usage of simple English language throughout to better understand the thoughts without jargons and, also references of suggested books and YouTube videos so you can master your knowledge. There is much more to your delightfrom group exercises to surveys and interviews and so on.
My sincere thanks to several prominent personalities and experts in their respective fields, who spared their valuable time and shared their thoughts about different aspects of this book. Thanks to Dr. R Seetharaman, Ms. Asna Nafees, Mr. A.P. Sharma, Mr. Brij Singhal, Mr. Amjad Vanimol, Ms. Kami Nuttal, Mr. Gopal Balasubramaniam, Ms. Jeyapriya Partiban, Dr. Babu Ramachandran, Mr. Adel Al-Hashmi, Ms. Usha Ravishankar, Mr. Chris Adonis, Ms. Kirsty Walker, Mr. Gil Bangalan, Ms. Anita Samanta, Mr. Neeraj Ritolia, Mr. Kit Barritt, Mr. Ahmad Hikal, Mr. Gulshan Mirg, Ms. Durga Sree Mavuru, and Ms. Eileen Lahi. Apologies to a few, as we were unable to include everyones views due to space constraints.
Since this was my first attempt, and certainly a tough task, I needed help from someone who could help and guide me as a co-author. One day, when I was with my long-time family friend Manzoor Moideen, I shared this idea. He is a profound speaker having authority in the field of communication, readily agreed to be part of this project. After many detailed and late-night sessions on how to design the chapters, what to include and what not to, what is relevant, and what will work, we could give it a shape. We carefully thought about our target readers, the value we could offer to them and how they can benefit from our efforts. I would fail in my duty if I do not thank the publisher of this book Notion Press, Ms. Vandana, Senior Editors Ms. Aanchal Nichani and Ms. Hema Priyadharshini for their valuable feedback, patience, and much-needed support. Sincere gratitude to my friend Raveendra for his valuable contribution by adding humour through some brilliant cartoons he created for this book.
This preface would be incomplete if I do not express my gratitude to one special person who always has motivated and pushed me to do the impossiblemy better half, my lovely wife Nisha, for her valuable suggestions and views to make this book a better one. Big thanks and hugs to my amazing kids, Anushka and Aditya, for their patience, support, and unconditional love. I wish also to thank my beloved mother, Mrs. Sushila Jain, for her countless blessings, other family members, friends and well-wishers for their feedback and support. It is time for me to also remember my father, late Mr. K.K. Jain, whom I have always admired and followed his advice to this day. He has always been in my heart and soul constantly, guiding me and showing me the right path. My gratitude to all those who remained behind the scenes, brought a difference in my life and made it possible for this book to see the light of the day.
Please note that all the incidents and conversations referenced in this book are true and taken from real-life incidents. Only the names of characters and places have been changed to keep the identity of real persons anonymous.
