Cutting MEDIUM- TO DARK- COLORED FABRICS Cut 4 kites from each FQ, using the Octagon Shimmer Kite pattern (sheet P1).
Due to bias edges, use starch and be careful not to stretch the fabric. Cut 4 kites from each FQ. LIGHT-COLORED FABRICS Method One: Traditional Cut 10 strips 12 WOF from each fabric for background triangles, using the Octagon Shimmer Side Triangle pattern (sheet P1). Carefully cut 7 triangles from each strip plus 2 extra, 72 total. Cut out exact shapes. You will trim them down after they are sewn and pressed as HST units. Make extra-long triangles to use with Method Two: Octagon Triangle Trimming. You will trim them down after they are sewn and pressed as HST units. Make extra-long triangles to use with Method Two: Octagon Triangle Trimming.
DARK BLUE Cut 4 strips of each size: 1 17 (A1) 1 13 (B1) Cut 4 rectangles of each size: 1 8 (C1) 1 7 (D) 1 4 (E) LIGHT BLUE Cut 4 rectangles of each size: 1 3 (A2) 1 3 (B2) 1 4 (C2) FUSIBLE WEB Cut 16 strips 18. * TipMethod Two: Octagon Triangle Trimming eliminates the problem of trying to perfectly line up and piece exact triangles to the kites. It creates a little bit more waste, but I prefer this relaxed approach with more accurate results. Construction Use seam allowance and press the seams open. QUILT TOP Sew the short side of a triangle to each long side of a kite to create a large HST. Press the seams open. Make a total of 36 HSTs. NOTE If you chose Method Two: Octagon Triangle Trimming and cut extra-long triangles, center the triangle on the kites side edge and sew.
After the seams are pressed open, trim the HST to size, using the Octagon Triangle Acrylic Template; or tape 1 Octagon Shimmer Kite pattern and 2 Side Triangle patterns together, lining them up along their solid lines to create a large HST template. Match the seams to the printed kite lines on the ruler or template and trim all the sides. This will give you more accurate blocks to work with. Sew 2 HSTs with the same color kite together. Repeat to sew the other 2 matching kite HSTs together. Sew these kite units together to create one large star block. Fig.A Repeat 8 more times to make a total of 9 star blocks, measuring 25 25 unfinished.
Fig.B Lay out the blocks in a 3 3 setting. Sew the blocks together in rows; then join rows to create the quilt top background. WREATH APPLIQU Sew the A1 to A2, B1 to B2, and C1 to C2 light blue and dark blue strips together along the short sides. Press the seams open. Feed the 1-wide A and B branch strips through a 25mm bias maker and the 1-wide C, D, and E branch strips through an 18mm bias maker. Press the tips and ends under.
Create a natural look by varying the fold over. The bias maker is only a guide. Cut the fusible strips to the lengths needed, remove paper backing from one side, and fuse them to the back of the branches, tapering them to the end. See the diagram for placement of a wreath quarter section onto the quilt background.
