Preface
Its one of those business success stories that has already become a legend in its own time: eBay, the hottest way to buy and sell goods and services over the internet.
Online auctions in general and eBay in particular are changing the way merchandise is bought and sold all over the world. Theyve made it easier than ever for people to start retail businesses and for existing businesses to expand to a worldwide market.
When we say, start an eBay business, what we really mean is to start a business that uses eBay as a marketing and distribution tool, or to add this element to an existing operation. Youre not starting an eBay business; youre starting a business selling whatever products youve decided to sell on eBay. This book is not about how to start an online auction business; its about how to use online auctions, eBay in particular, to start and grow your own business.
Are you a little uncomfortable with the idea of doing business in the vast world of cyberspace? Dont be. E-commerce is finally finding its place in the business world. The spectacular rise and equally spectacular crash of the dotcoms during the90s was just part of the process of learning how to best use the internet. What happened in the dotcom debacle is not unique in business. Its happened in other industries at other points in history. People get excited and for some reason decide that the basic fundamentals of doing business dont apply to them. And they fail.
If youre excited about doing business on eBay, thats great. You should be. Just dont get so excited that you do stupid things. If you start to run your company using sound business principles, youll succeed.
Keep in mind that many of the dotcom companies that were formed in the 1990s are still thriving. Why? Because they have products people want to buy, they have a clear plan, and they use sound business management techniques. If you choose your products carefully, develop a plan, and manage your operation well, your company will join the ranks of successful e-commerce operations. This book will help you do that, but it wont do the work for you, and it wont tell you how to make jillions of dollars working just two hours a week. What it will do is serve as a guide, a roadmap for you to use in getting your company launched. Like most businesses, operating on eBay will offer rewards proportionate to your efforts. With your own plan, a system, and the perseverance to follow it through, you can enjoy consistent profits from your eBay activities.
A lot of companies out there offer plans and systems to help people get started in an online business. Some are legitimate, but too many are scams that will just cost you money. And some of the legitimate operators sell the same advice to all their clients, which means you risk ending up with a cookie-cutter operation that has the same look and same products as hundreds of other sites, with lots of competition and few, if any, customers. Nothing can take the place of doing your own research and preparation, and putting the stamp of your own personality on your business.
Maybe, like many of the eBay sellers we talked with, youre a shopper who needs to make money to continue to buy. Or like one seller, youve bought too much and want to get rid of that stuff. Or like all the sellers we talked with, you have an entrepreneurial spirit, you want to start your own business, and eBay is an appropriate sales vehicle.
Whatever is motivating you, know this: Doing business on eBay is fun, exciting, profitableand hard work. If youre not willing to put in the effort and the hours, no amount of information will make you successful.
Regardless of the particular type of business you want to own, how much money you have, whether you want to be homebased or operate from a commercial location, this book will tell you how to use eBay to start and grow. Well begin with an overview of online auctions, look at the products and services you can sell, and then go through the step-by-step process of setting up and running your new venture. Throughout the book, youll hear from successful eBay sellers who have built profitable operations and are eager to share what theyve learned in the process. Of course, reading a book can only take you so far; once you actually start selling on eBay, youll work and learn as you go.
Whether you plan to start a part-time business by yourself or jump into eBay selling full time and hire employees, we recommend you read every chapter in this book because most of the information applies to all sizes and types of eBay operations, and the information is interrelated.
So relax and start reading. The thrilling and lucrative world of selling on eBay is within your reach.
Introductionto eBay
The goal of this book is to teach you how to build a profitable business selling on eBayand the most important word in this sentence is profitable. Making sales on eBay is simple, and you can learn how to do that by just browsing the site. But if youre serious about your business, then the point of selling on eBay is to make a profit.
Beware!
eBay transactions are between the buyer and seller. As the online auction site, eBay is merely the vehicle that brings the buyer and seller together. eBay will assist with disputes but is not ultimately responsible for the transaction.
Before we get into the nuts and bolts of successful eBay selling, lets take a look at how this opportunity came to be.
The first online auction venue hit the internet in 1994. The following year, Pierre Omidyar introduced the site that would eventually be known as eBay. Originally called Auction Web, it started out as a kind of virtual garage sale, but with the added excitement of auction pricing. And it was so successful that it didnt take long for other online auction sites to pop up.
