Tips and Strategies for Preparing Frozen Slow Cooker Dinners
T hese frozen slow cooker recipes are so easy to follow, but here are a few tips to help you:
- Dont worry about combining raw beef, pork or chicken with vegetables . Since the plastic bags will be frozen, no bacteria will grow. These bag meals are as safe as the frozen bag dinners you buy at the supermarket. The only difference is the price and having bragging rights for cooking dinner!
- Use an assembly line to prepare your ingredients. If 4 recipes require chopped peppers, for instance, calculate how much you need in total and do all of the chopping at one time. When you have cut up all of peppers you need, place the correct amount in each of the labeled meal bags. Then go on to prepare the next ingredient.
- Get family members involved, if possible. Children will love helping measure spices and other ingredients. Older teens can help chop vegetables or the proteins.
- Label the meals completely. Make sure you include the name of the dish and the date you have prepared the frozen bag. Also include the temperature you need to set the slow cooker on and how many hours it should cook.
- Push extra air out of the bag. To avoid freezer burn, remove as much air from the filled bag as possible before you seal and freeze it.
- If your freezer bag is not quite defrosted, dont worry. A slightly frozen freezer meal will quickly defrost as the crockpot heats up. Next time adjust the number of hours you defrost the bag in the refrigerator.
- Start with simple recipes that use similar ingredients. Similar dishes will reduce the amount of different items you need to chop or otherwise prepare.
