Social networking platforms enable people to

share videos almost instantly.

WHAT IS SOCIAL

NETWORKING?

ou just recorded a video of the

funniest thing ever, and you want

your friend to see it. But shes in

another city with her family . What

do you do? Log on to your favorite

social media site. Go to her page and

write, You have to see this! Upload

the video, and then click Share.

A few seconds later, you see a bright red

heart on your screen . Your friend loved

the video!

Social networking is a type of

electronic communication. It can happen

between two people or between many

people at once. The creators of social

networks wanted to make it possible

for people to share pictures, messages,

videos , and other parts of everyday life .

Social networking platforms are

designed for exchanging and sharing

information. Some platforms focus on a

particular type of information, such as

sending messages or sharing photos.

Other platforms are used between

combine all of these things in one place.

Social networking got its start in

1997 with a site called Six Degrees.

Members could send messages and

make friends with other users. Around

the same time, personal websites

were becoming popular. People called

them web logs , or blogs for short.

Blogs are a kind of online diary. At first,

most people used blogs to share opinions

about current events. In 1999, blogging

became more common thanks to a new

platform called Blogger.

Blogger gave people a place to write

about things that were important to them.

TWITTER

A twitter is the fast, high-pitched sound a bird

makes. The makers of Twitter were inspired by

that description. The platform was based on short

messaging services that use the standard length of

characters. However, Twitters creators wanted

to leave characters for the senders username.

Thats why Twitter allows only characters

per tweet.

Kids between the ages of and spend an average of

more than three hours a day online.

But people wanted to share more than

their opinions. Soon, combination sites

such as MySpace started popping up.

These sites enabled users to upload

pictures, videos, and music. In 2004, the

worlds most popular social networking

site for teens and adults, Facebook,

was born.

ocial media messages seem to travel

instantly. But how do those messages

get to where they are going so quickly?

It helps to think about the Internet as

a series of connected streets. When a

person takes a trip on an actual street,

she may carry her clothing in a suitcase.

Information moves on the Internet much like

people move on streets.
