Types of Sushi

If you are the type of person that didn't grow up around eating sushi, then you may be confused about all the different types of sushi rolls and types of sushi that there are out there. (1) The Difference between Sushi and Sashimi?

For starters you may have come across two different types of sushi known as sushi and sashimi. The truth is sashimi is just the meat of the fish served without any other ingredients. In all sense of the word it is just a slab of meat. However, sushi is a type that uses other ingredients such as vegetables and is typically wrapped in a roll of seaweed and rice.
Let's not forget about Nigiri. Nigiri is very similar to sashimi except it is served on a molded piece of rice. You also need to keep in mind that sashimi itself is considered raw fish, but it can be comprised of other types of underwater sea creature such as eel or octopus.

There are literally dozens of different types of sashimi out there and it goes by its own different name depending on what type of fish that is used to. It also depends on whether the fish is raw or cooked as sashimi can come in both types. The most popular types of Sashimi that are available today include:

(3) Different Types of Sushi

Dragon Roll-complex sushi roll that uses eel, fresh avocado and cucumber, but of course can be made with some variation
Tiger Roll-packed with avocado, raw shrimp, fresh cucumber and tempura
Rainbow Roll-a piece of sushi that is packed with avocado and crab, and is served with sashimi on top
California Roll-A simple sushi roll packed with crab and avocado
Spicy Tuna Roll-Tuna Made with a spicy sauce
Spider Roll-made with soft shell crab and is packed with cucumber and sprouts. Although sometimes it can be made using other vegetables such as lettuce or avocado and can be made with spicy mayo.
Hot Night Roll-made with spicy tuna, fresh cucumber and shrimp tempura
Philadelphia Roll-a very simple roll made with fresh salmon, avocado, a dab of cream cheese and asparagus
Shrimp Killer Roll-made with shrimp tempura and fresh cucumber on the inside and topped with a piece of cooked shrimp
Hungry Roll-made with spicy tuna packed on the inside and topped with crispy seaweed and tempura.
Tempura Roll-One or more parts of this piece of sushi is deep fried
Teriyaki Roll-Packed with filling nori, chicken and smothered in teriyaki sauce
Dynamite Roll-Packed with Yellowtail tempura, healthy bean sprouts, fresh avocado and drizzled with a spicy mayo
Boston Roll-Simple fresh crab, wild caught salmon and scallions
Alaskan Roll-Made with wild caught smoked salmon, fresh avocado and fresh asparagus
Snowcorn Roll-This roll is packed full of fresh crab and fresh avocado and topped with baked white fish.
Baked Salmon Roll-Stuffed with fresh avocado, soft cream cheese and fresh yamagobo and topped off with baked salmon

There are literally hundreds of different ways to make sushi and there are literally thousands of different ingredients that you can use to make great tasting sushi each and every time. (1) Rice Vinegar

If sushi rice is considered to be one of the most important ingredients you can use for sushi today, then rice vinegar is just as important. Rice vinegar is made with a combination of sugar and salt and helps to give your sushi rice that sweet flavor that is often associated with it. While this ingredient is not too common to use, you should be able to find it easily in your local supermarket.
(2) Sushi Rice

The very first and most important ingredient that you will ever use to make your sushi is the all-important sushi rice. Making the perfect sushi rice and make or break your sushi. Even those of us who have never tried sushi know the unmistakable ingredient known as Wasabi. Wasabi itself is from a wasabi root and contains a hot flavor that can make or break some people. You can either serve this wasabi on the side or lightly wipe it onto the sushi itself.
(4) Kombu

Kombu or also known as dried seaweed. This ingredient is mainly used to make dashi, but is considered to be an essential for making the best tasting sushi rice. Just add a touch of this to your rice while it is soaking and while it is cooking for the tastiest results.
