PICTURES OF FAMILY MEMBERS
The pictures on these pages include picturesfrom my fathers original book and pictures I have added. Some ofthe negatives for the pictures were not available to me, so I madecopies of the picture from Dads original text. For some of thesepictures, it worked well; for others, it did not work well. Whilemy father included pictures of individuals in this book who werenot mentioned, I tried to include those people who were relatedspecifically to the Tipswords, Sowards, and Dotys that were talkedabout in this book. As I went through the pictures that I had frommy father, I included those pictures that I thought would be a goodsubstitute for those pictures which turned out badly or that Icould not find.
For the e-book edition, these pictures are available on a CDROM or other attachment afteryou have purchased this book from Smashwords.com. Please e-mail meat and after I verify the purchase, I wil send thepictures.
FORWARD
This book contains genealogical informationon the Sowards and Tipsword families as well as short excerpts onthe Benson, Chambers, Carlyle, Doty, Owens and other collateralfamilies. It was extracted from Federal, State, County and, in somecases, Township records as well as Family Bibles and Familymanuscripts. Several references have been included throughout thebook so the skeptical and curious can do a little libraryreading.
Several books have been written whichincludes some of this information. Since it is easier to obtain andread the books than the records, some of the books have beenlisted. If the reference book is not available in your library;ask, and they will order it for you.
If you are interested in the Soward and/orTipsword family, then read this book from cover to cover. I have"facts" scattered throughout the book. The last few pages of thisbook may be more interesting than the first few pages.
[My note: The historical facts were movedinto Chapter II, which dealt with Historical Backgroundinformation. The family lore and stories were moved into ChapterIII.]
The index is arranged to encourage you toread the complete chapter or chapters that may be of interest toyou. Remember this, you may be only a name or not even mentioned inthis book; but, if not mentioned, maybe, just maybe, one of yourancestors is listed and you can take it from there.
[My note: I changed the index to a trueindex and created a true Table of Contents.]
I have checked the Wills, Deeds, Land entryRecords and several other Court records of Russell Co., VA,Greenbrier and Monroe Counties of West Virginia from theirbeginning to 1850. I found no information on the Soward familyafter 1809. I believe that all of the children of Isaac Sowards,Sr., with the exception of Isaac Sowards, Jr., had left Virginia by1803. The records support this. I checked the records for thefollowing names Soward, Tipsword, Dickerson, Doty, Ashby, Ballard,Brunker, Benson, Carlisle, Claborn, Clark, Crouch, Dougherty,Dysart, Hall, Lewis, Massey, Mills, Myers, Clayborn, Roton, Rucker,Tate, Templeton, Thompson, Vancil, Vanderford, Wigfield andWood.
Most were negative and the few that hadentries were easily determined as not applicable to the Doty,Soward or Tipsword families. I also checked the records for thefollowing names with similar results: Ruth, Miliston, Nelly,Rebecca (Rebeckah). I have added a few remarks concerning the namesof Nelly, Rebecca and Mary.
So, now we know why Isaac Sowards Sr. lefthis entire estate to his wife, Miliston, and his son, Isaac Jr. Heleft his other children: Thomas, Ruth, Miliston, Griffin, Rebeckahand Nelly five shillings each. They all had left Virginia and by1803 were in Ohio, Kentucky or Tennessee.
I found Sowards or their relatives inSullivan, Green, and Knox County in Tennessee; Floyd and PikeCounties in Kentucky; and Jefferson, Wayne, Gallia, Lawrence,Fayette, Coshocton Counties of Ohio.
Included in this report are documents, whichprove that Griffin Sowards/Tipsword was in Russell Co., Virginiaduring the period of 1796 to October 27, 1802. He was in Ohio in1803 to 1813 period and in Illinois from 1813 to his death.
I have quoted documents, which place GriffinSowards in Greenbrier County, Virginia from 1789 thru 1795. He paidtaxes there until 1799.
Old Griffin Tipsword once referred to himselfas a Virginian. If this is true, then he was born about 1773 andwas the son of Thomas and Esther Sowards and a brother of RosannahSowards Doty.
The records indicate that he could have beenborn in 1755 or in 1773. I could not determine which date was theright one. If he was born in 1773, then what happened to the oneborn in 1755? Well, I could not find out for certain what happenedto any of the children of Isaac Sr. and Miliston Soward. The best Icould come up with is the Benson story. Somehow, it accounts forNelly as this book accounts for Old Griffin.
