Introduction

W elcome and congratulations ! By picking up this book, youve taken the first step to starting your blog. I dont know what inspired you to open these pages, but I can guess. Not so long ago, I was in your shoes. Learning everything I could about how to start a blog, create great content, and get my message out into the world.

I wanted more from life and I was hungry to learn. I uncovered plenty of information to feed my hunger, which is where I encountered my first problem. Theres too much information online.

You can read about WordPress, Search Engine Optimization, email lists, content marketing, social media, affiliate marketing and more. Its all useful stuff. But wheres the plan?

How do you know what to do first? What social media platforms are best? How often should you publish blog posts? How should you monetize your blog? How do you even get people to read your blog?

And of course, the greatest challenge of all:

How do you find time to get it all done?

Through research, taking courses, and lots of mistakes I unearthed answers to these questions. But I didnt do it alone. On my journey I had the help of some amazing colleagues and mentors. One of those people is my co-author, Lisa Tanner.

Before I met Lisa, I thought I was doing well managing my time. But Lisa takes things to a whole new level. Shes a homeschooling mom to eight kids, a blogger, and a freelancer. Yup, you read that right. Lisa is raising eight kids while running a successful online business. What Lisa doesnt know about starting a blog and raising a family isnt worth knowing.

Something else I admire about Lisa is how intentional she is with her blog. Its tempting to hop from one project to the next. Chasing shiny objects. Trying the latest tactics. But when you have the demands of a large family, you dont have time to waste on ideas that dont work.

Lisas approach to blogging is laser focused. She knows what she needs to do to publish amazing content and spread the word. And by the time you finish reading this book, you will too.

But lets rewind a bit. Maybe youre not sure whether you want to start a blog. I dont want you to waste your time with this book if it isnt the right path for you. So, lets look at what you need to be a successful blogger. Ill also discuss why you might want to start a blog in the first place.

F irst and foremost , you need to love writing. Im going to be straight with you here. If you dont enjoy writing, forget about blogging. Go start a YouTube channel or Podcast instead. Because when you create a blog, youre going to be writing a lot.

I publish two articles a week. Each article is around 1,000 to 2,000 words. Thats at least 3,000 words a week. On top of that, I publish several books a year. So, yes, I love writing. If I didnt, Id have no chance of sustaining a blogging career.

Now, you dont have to be the best writer. Im not. But by writing every week, youre going to improve faster than you thought possible. You just need to enjoy the process of turning your thoughts into words.

On its own, a love of writing isnt enough. You also need to be passionate about your blogging topic. You must have a subject or theme you love so much that you can write about it for a long time. Lisa dives deep into picking your niche in chapter one.

The good news is that you dont have to choose a narrow topic. It doesnt hurt to niche down, either. Writing about a single, well-defined subject makes it easy for others who share your passion to discover and read your blog.

However, I didnt niche down. I blog about working from home and living your best life. Im multi-passionateI love learning and sharing new ideas. On my blog, I cover a range of topics including self-publishing, freelancing, blogging, starting a coaching business, simple living, productivity, success, and work-life balance. Although I cover diverse topics, I have a common theme and a specific audience. My theme is profiting from work you love. And I write for stay-at-home parents who want more in their lives. Parents who want to stay home with their kids and earn an incomewithout feeling torn between the two.

Okay, you love writing and youve found something youre passionate about. What else do you need to be a successful blogger? Nothing. Youre good to go!

You only need these two things to succeed. Everything else can be learned or outsourced. In fact, you will learn everything you need for your first year of blogging as you read this book.

W hat can you reasonably expect after blogging for a year? Why even bother?

Lets talk about money first, because I know this is a pressing concern for most people. Heres what I want you to know. Despite what others might say, you can earn an income as a blogger. In this book, we share six ways to monetize your blog. After one year (assuming youre consistent and have a message people want to hear) you can earn anywhere from $1,000 a month to six figures a year.
