Foreword

French Bulldogs have resurged in popularityin recent years because they are the perfect size to live asapartment dogs, are extremely affectionate with their owners, exhibit a high level of intelligence, and are so darn cute itsalmost impossible not to croon awwwwwwww when you see one.

For me, it was love at first sight and Ivebeen owned by several Frenchies since that time.

That being said, I really wouldnt recommendthe breed for everyone. French Bulldogs are reasonably healthy dogswhen acquired from a reputable breeder, but they are, to someextent, what my grandfather derisively called hothouse dogs.

Thats actually a misnomer. Theyre more airconditioner dogs. Frenchies dont do well in temperature extremes, cannot take vigorous exercise, and they cant swim (unless taughthow to). This all works for me. I live in a small space. I like toget the dog walking over in the cool of the day and not be gonemore than a few minutes. I live in a climate where I prefer an airconditioner as well and I work from home.

My Frenchie is perfectly happy to get up withme, make a quick circuit around a couple of blocks, and then settleinto his favorite bed to supervise me for the rest of the day. Thisis punctuated by a little in-house play and a lot of snoring on hispart.

Hes not a big barker, although he holds apersonal grudge against the UPS man which Ive never quite beenable to fathom.

When my little tyrant doesnt like somethingI do, hes much more likely to let out a warbling yodel to expresshis displeasure, which I frankly find funny. Im not sure theneighbors would agree.

I like the breeds highly social nature andeasygoing spirit. They can be, by turns, quite comical, and theyare very faithful. My little guy does have a minor subluxatingpatella, which we are managing, and thankfully no hip dysplasia, which is a known issue with the breed.

In the following pages, I will try toacquaint you with all the pros and cons of life with a Frenchie andto provide insight into canine husbandry for those people who havenot lived with a dog before.

I do think a Frenchie is a good first dogand they will get on famously with well-behaved children, but theycant take a lot of outside rough housing.

Read carefully and make your decision with acritical eye toward your time and lifestyle. I firmly believe thatno adoption of any animal should be based on any primaryconsideration other than the welfare of the living creature thatwill become your primary responsibility. If you can care for aFrenchie, I promise, the Frenchie will care for you.

As an owner, expert trainer, and professionaldog whisperer, I would like to teach you the human side of theequation, so you can learn how to think more like your dog andeliminate behavioral problems with your pet.

Once youve read this book you will have allthe information you need in order to make a well-informed decisionabout whether or not the French Bulldog is the breed for you, andyou will know how to care for them every stage of their life.
