Carolyns designs have been published regularly in several magazines, including Quilters World. She has had many designs published in quilting books as well. Many of her exclusive designs can be found at Clotilde.com.
The creative process has been a notable part of her life. She studied drawing, pottery and sculpture in college and received a liberal arts degree. She finally found her niche in quilting when asked to do some design work. That was ten years ago, and she has been designing quilts and working in the quilt industry ever since.
Introduction
When I first started quilting, I found I made a lot of unnecessary mistakes because everyone that taught me assumed I knew certain things. By their assuming I knew these things, my first, second and third quilting journeys were on bumpy roads. Actually, they were filled with potholes.
As I watched others quilt, I started asking why they did things the way they did them. And as I asked the questions and learned the answers the road got smoother.
This book will address those unasked questions and the answers that are assumed. A new quilter needs information to make a successful attempt at her or his first quilt. We want you to have the knowledge to go on to your next quilt project with the confidence that you can do it.
We want your first quilting experience to be a great one. We have picked a block pattern that will address certain common techniques that a new quilter needs to know. This block also allows for many setting possibilities. You can make it with any style of fabric so long as you have lights and darks for contrast. This quilt can truly be your creation in every way. Pick the fabrics you like. Your choices will dictate if it is traditional, vintage or contemporary.
Its a great first-quilt project, and one you may choose to do again. I sometimes like to look at a photo of my first quiltI call it my humility quiltto prove how far I have come in my quilting. It also reminds me that I have much more to learn.
In the ever-changing world of quilting, there is always something new and exciting to learn. Your journey has just begun. May all your quilt journeys be successful!
Project Notes
The Ollies Square block pattern was selected to help you learn basic quiltmaking skills. This block has large pieces that are stitched together with straight seams. All cutting can be done with a rotary cutter and ruler on a cutting mat.
Specific skills, such as selecting the pattern, choosing fabrics, quiltmaking tools and more are detailed in other sections of this book. It would be helpful for you to read this information before starting this quilt.
For this pattern, select two fabrics with contrast to make the blocksone light and one dark fabric. One other fabric was introduced in a narrow inner border that separates the blocks from the outer borders.
The fabrics listed and instructions given result in a long twin-size quilt, which is a nice beginner-size quilt.
If you prefer to make a larger quilt, it is easy to accomplish by adding more borders or wider borders while keeping the number of blocks the same.
More blocks may also be added to enlarge a quilt, but the block layout may need to change, depending on the way you set the blocks together. To change the layout of the blocks, refer to the gallery of quilts at the end of this book and the Alternate Placement Diagrams on pages for layout suggestions.
