Updated November 24, 2015

In this crash course about OS X 10.11 El Capitan, former Macworld editor Scholle McFarland helps you discover and master changes in the Finder as well as in Apples Notes, Safari, and Messages apps. The books browsable layout makes it easy for you to find the information that you care about the most as you learn how to set up notifications sensibly, do more (or less) with your Dock, invoke Mission Control and set up a Split View, take phone calls on your Mac, locate all manner of things with Spotlight search, work fluidly between Apple devices with Handoff and AirDrop, dictate to your Mac and even tell it what to do plus lots more.

Scholle closes with two under-the-hood topics, setting up a user account (for a child, guest, or troubleshooting) and essential troubleshooting techniques.

Whether you want to browse for a few tips or go deep, youll learn about...

  • Four techniques for invoking Mission Control, with its new Spaces Bar
  • The new Split View, which puts two apps side-by-side in an elegant way
  • How pinned tabs in Safari work differently and in some cases better than bookmarks
  • The keyboard shortcut for auto-filling your personal information into a Safari form
  • Finding the new checkbox for auto-hiding the menu bar
  • How you can delete a file without emptying the entire Trash (finally!)
  • What to do if you cant stand OS Xs translucent menu bars and windows
  • How to keep your Spotlight searches private
  • The necessary settings for Handoff to work between devices
  • Setting up the Macs Notification Center so its useful
  • Using the Attachment Browser in El Capitans new Notes app
  • Deciding whether to use plain or enhanced dictation
  • Making your Mac announce incoming alert notifications with a custom voice
  • Setting up smart folders that bring tagged files into view easily
  • Essential tips for decreasing Finder window overload with tabs
  • Many picky details about AirDrop file transfer and ideas for alternatives
  • Setting up an account for a child with parental controls and age-based limits
  • What to do if your Mac wont turn on, if you get the spinning beachball of death, or if you need to repair your disk and how to easily find out if your Mac still has AppleCare
  • As part of our Crash Course series, this book will provide the first-rate content you expect from us in short chunks so you can dip in and read quickly. Because so many Take Control readers give tech support to others, each concise chapter has sharing buttons and practical tweet-tips, making it easy to share a few pages with Facebook friends, Twitter followers, and others who really need the information. Introduction

OS X 10.11 El Capitans name says a lot. Dubbed for the rock formation loved by climbers and found inside Yosemite National Park, this operating system isnt a whole new thing, its a collection of refinements. El Capitan makes the big changes in 10.10 Yosemite better and offers contributions, both subtle and substantial, of its own.

My assumption is that youve figured out whether your Mac can run El Capitan, youve loaded the OS on your system, and now youre ready to go. For detailed help with upgrading, see Take Control of Upgrading to El Capitan.

Together well hit the highlights, from El Capitans little changes, to updates to apps and system-wide tools including Notes, Mission Control, Spotlight, Safari, and more. If youre primarily curious about the new features Apple added to the operating system and the built-in apps, skip straight to to find the chapters that interest you the most.

Apples OS X updates keep coming fast and furiousevery year nowso my guess is youve missed a few useful, but not so obvious, tricks. With that in mind, Ive included information about a few of my old favorites. Finder Tabs let you cut down on window clutter; theyre so simple and useful, you wont believe you havent been using them all along. Finder Tags let you tag your files so that theyre easier to find later. Invest a little time thinking about what you want to keep available in your Dock, and youll find it offers one-click access as well as many convenient shortcuts.

Since many people felt disappointed that Siri wasnt a part of this OS X update, well also look at speech and dictation features, so you can learn just what is possible when you talk to your Mac today. In El Capitan, Apple beefs up dictation with new voice activation and some useful built-in dictation workflows.

Finally, well look at the least you need to know to prepare for trouble: how to set up user accounts to handle problems and how to run Recovery mode when your Mac is on the fritz. Along the way, well take a look at the changes El Capitan has brought to Disk Utility.

Sharing is wired into this ebook, so whenever you run across a tip you love, pass it on! Just use the links at the end of each chapter to send it to friends and colleagues or broadcast it via social media.

By the time youre done with this Crash Course, youll know which OS X features fit the way you work and youll be ready to jump in and start using them right away.

    El Capitan Quick Start

Whats the least you need to know to use 10.11 El Capitan effectively? This book will fill you in. Most chapters focus on new features, but Ive thrown in a few useful features from older versions of OS X that you might not have explored in depth. Well also examine a few built-in Apple apps to see how their changes can benefit you. The list below shows the books topics. Click any link to jump to a chapter.
