Introduction

Lies, Lust and Love Over Lunch is a book of real stories from real people. Some may be a little shocking, some are uplifting encounters of enduring love, and some are downright surreal. As shocking as some of these dating tales may be, I have coached every one of these daters during my tenure as a Matchmaker at the dating service Its Just Lunch, located in Washington, DC.

Stories like these happen every day and everywhere, and thats why Its Just Lunch (IJL), which was founded in 1991, continues to be one of the most respected names in the dating industry. The purpose of this book is to take real life scenarios, present them to you as they happened, and then tell you what my experience has taught me about the situationand how you can avoid dating disasters and find true love. At the end of each chapter, youll find my advice under "Kristas Love Lesson," where Ill share my exclusive Matchmakers insight into each situation, whether its how to avoid an awkward situation or take advantage of instant chemistry.

While every story in this book is based on true stories, confidentiality is of the utmost importance to the people I work with. My client list includes numerous multi-millionaires, politicians, high-ranking State Department officials, and ambassadors to foreign nations. Others have been media moguls, news anchors, professional athletes and those who have graced the front page of the New York Times and the Washington Post . Discretion is critical to my clients, so Ive changed all names to maintain confidentiality.

While there are certainly a number of hilarious moments throughout this book, I take my calling as a Matchmaker very seriously. I may make light of the situations at different points, but thats only to highlight the positive changes that can be made to turn things around, and to help you avoid the pitfalls of the dating world.

Lies, Lust and Love Over Lunch is just that; I send my clients out for drinks, brunch or lunch dates for their first encounter with each other and, after that, whatever happens is up to them. You just never know what to expect on a date. As youll see in this book, sometimes there is instant chemistry between two people. Love and music is truly stunning; the rhythm of a heartbeat closely follows that of a great R&B song; as the action heats up, the heartbeat grows faster and louder, just as the bass drum in a song. The rhythm of love can be expressed in many other ways, from holding your partner close and swaying to the sounds of a classic song, to the cadence of love making. Theres even a rhythm to a date that changes as things begin to go well and changes again when things arent going so well.

And that brings us to the blues. There isnt a man or woman in this world who hasnt felt the blues that lost love can bring. From lamenting about the one that got away to the pain of a consenting adult whose goal is to have some fun and the lunch date turns into a night of passion. Youll also meet some singles in the chapters who find it necessary to try to impress their date with what they think are little white lies (although its not easy to cover up a lie such as being a billionaire!) in the hopes of making a connection. And who can forget the woman who showed up to her date with food in the corner of her mouth, hair looking like a birds nest, holes in her nylons and stains all over her clothes?

As classic as some of these characters might be, the true intent of this book is to give advice so that my clients (and you) can have the relationship you deserve, whatever that may mean to you.

Ive included a sampling of stories of instant chemistry, whirlwind romances and true, lasting love. Youll be inspired by tales of long-term, healthy relationships that started with an hour-long lunch date. Youll come to admire the innate ability that a Matchmaker has to spot the special characteristics in two people that can bring about instant shared admiration and respect. When the match is right, it really is magical to watch it develop, and Ill tell you how to nurture that budding relationship, all while helping you to avoid common pitfalls through stories of those who sabotaged a great thing.

Ive also added an element that most dating books fail to acknowledgethat there truly is a rhythm to love. This book is not about sharing stories of the blues for the sake of entertainment, its about learning how to prevent the blues by being honest, upfront and sincere. Some of the stories within speak about the blues through humorous stories of dates gone bad, but I only include them to discuss what went wrong in order to give you the tools to dodge the blues. Its heartbreaking for me to see my clients make mistakes that can be easily avoided. My hope is that through this book you will become a smarter, more informed dater and save yourself some heartache.
