Introduction
There is nothing quite as delicious as biting into a warm dessert that you know has been made from scratch using fresh ingredients. In our neck of the woods, Amish culture and Amish cooking are a very big deal. There are stands set up and general stores aplenty that sells Amish pies and cakes, all using local ingredients and baked within a day or two of purchase.
Let me tell you, they are so good! Ive put together a book of classic Amish recipes so that you can try your hand at making something old fashioned and delicious at home. In todays busy world, its nice to return to simple and classic recipes to put on the table for our families. It doesnt have to require hours in the kitchen or fancy bells and whistles. You can create something tasty and simple that fills bellies and makes your family ask for more. If you want to do the authentic Amish experience, you can use things from the garden or ingredients that are sourced locally. To go one step further, you can make these things the old fashioned way, by hand.
However you choose to whip up these recipes, they are sure to taste delicious and have your family begging for seconds. Please enjoy!

AMAZING AMISH BLUEBERRY CAKE
Cup milk 2 Cup flour 2 Teaspoon baking powder Teaspoon salt 2 Cup blueberries, well drained Cup sugar Cup vegetable oil 1 egg TOPPING: Cup sugar 1/3 Cup flour Teaspoon cinnamon Cup butter In a large bowl, cream together sugar, oil and egg. Stir in milk. In a separate bowl sift together flour, baking powder and salt, then stir into creamed mixture. Gently fold in blueberries. Pour batter into greased and floured 9x9 pan.
IN another bowl, mix together the topping ingredients. Sprinkle topping over the cake batter. Bake for 45-50 minutes at 375 degrees.
AMAZING AMISH ROLLED OATS CAKE
1 Cup white sugar 1 Cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 Teaspoon vanilla 1 Cup flour 1 Teaspoon soda 1 Cup oats 1 Cup boiling water Cup shortening Teaspoon baking powder 1 Teaspoon cinnamon Teaspoon nutmeg TOPPING (use on warm cake): 5 Tablespoon butter Cup brown sugar Cup milk In a large bowl, mix oats and boiling water. Let stand for 20 minutes. In a smaller bowl, cream together shortening, sugar, eggs, vanilla and add oats with remaining dry ingredients.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. In a small bowl, stir together topping ingredients until well mixed. Pour over warm cake. You can top with nuts if desired.
AMAZING AMISH SHORTCAKE
1 angel food cake, cubed 1 Package vanilla pudding 1 Cup milk 1 pt. vanilla ice cream 1 Package strawberry Jello 1 Cup boiling water 1 Package frozen strawberries Whipped Cream Put angel food cake cubes in bottom of casserole dish, arranging randomly.
Mix together vanilla pudding mix and milk, then pour mixture over top of the angel food cake pieces. Mix together the strawberry jello mix and water, folding in the frozen strawberries last, then pour strawberry mixture over top of vanilla mixture. Refrigerate and serve. You can top with whipped cream before serving.
AMAZING AMISH SNICKERDOODLES
Cup margarine 2 eggs 1 Cup sugar Cup Crisco solid shortening 2 Cup flour 2 Teaspoon cream of tarter 1 Teaspoon baking soda Teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoon sugar 2 Teaspoon cinnamon Mix butter, shortening, eggs and sugar together, mixing thoroughly. Sift the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt together.
Add to the first mixture, forming a dough. Roll the dough into balls (walnut size). Roll into mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Place about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 375 degrees.
AMAZING AMISH BROWN SUGAR PIE
1 unbaked 8-inch pie shell 1 Cup brown sugar 1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk 2 Tablespoon butter 3 Tablespoon all-purpose flour Speck of salt Ground cinnamon In a bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour and salt, then pour into the bottom of the pie shell.
AMAZING AMISH BROWN SUGAR PIE
1 unbaked 8-inch pie shell 1 Cup brown sugar 1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk 2 Tablespoon butter 3 Tablespoon all-purpose flour Speck of salt Ground cinnamon In a bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour and salt, then pour into the bottom of the pie shell.
Pour the evaporated milk over the flour and sugar, but do not mix this in. Dot with butter, and sprinkle cinnamon liberally over all. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, or until the filling bubbles up in the middle. The filling will never completely set, but that's the way it's supposed to be. This recipe can be doubled and prepared in a 10-inch pie shell.
AMAZING AMISH POPPYSEED BREAD
3 Cup flour 3 eggs, beaten 1 Teaspoon salt 1 Teaspoon baking powder 1 Cup oil 1 Cup milk 2 Cup sugar 1 Teaspoon vanilla 1 Teaspoon almond flavor 1 Teaspoon butter flavor 1 Tablespoon poppy seeds GLAZE: 1/4 Cup orange juice 3/4 Cup sugar Teaspoon almond flavor Teaspoon butter flavor Teaspoon vanilla In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt and baking powder.
AMAZING AMISH POPPYSEED BREAD
3 Cup flour 3 eggs, beaten 1 Teaspoon salt 1 Teaspoon baking powder 1 Cup oil 1 Cup milk 2 Cup sugar 1 Teaspoon vanilla 1 Teaspoon almond flavor 1 Teaspoon butter flavor 1 Tablespoon poppy seeds GLAZE: 1/4 Cup orange juice 3/4 Cup sugar Teaspoon almond flavor Teaspoon butter flavor Teaspoon vanilla In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt and baking powder.
Add remaining ingredients, mixing well. Pour mixture into 2 greased and floured bread pans. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. For glaze, mix juice, sugar and flavorings together, blending well. Prick bread loaves with a fork after baking and pour glaze over while hot.
AMAZING AMISH YEAST ROLLS
7 Cups flour 2 Packages quick yeast - Cup sugar Teaspoon salt 1 Cup sour cream 1/2 to 1 Cup milk 2 sticks butter In a bowl, heat your butter until it is softened, but not runny.
Place in microwave. Mix in milk, sour cream, salt, sugar, yeast and flour. Knead this dough for 10-15 minutes. Put in warm place and let rise for about 20 minutes. Put dough on board and punch down. Shape in desired shapes.
