Preview - The main icons & navigation controls

Somereaders of this guide may have used windows computers, so these are the maindifferences between android and Windows.

While theWindows operating system has both left and right mouse clicks, right click ofthe mouse does not exist in the android operating system. Windows programmes are called apps (applications) in Android. Windows favourite websites pages are called bookmarks in Android. Windows software translates as Android firmware.

Androidhas twelve main navigation controls. If you are a beginner, assoon as you have mastered these twelve controls, you should be able navigatefreely around your device, therefore understanding these is very important.

Googlehas changed some of the icons over the years, with new releases of android, sowhere applicable, an example of both an early and a late design icon are shownside by side. On some devices, some of these control icons can be found on thedevice itself, below the screen.

Picture 1CLICK is achieved with asingle touch of the finger or a single left click of a mouse.

Picture 2PRESS is achieved with a longpress of the finger or holding down the left button of the mouse.

Picture 3DRAG is achieved by asimultaneous long press of the finger and sliding the finger in any directionor by sliding a finger on a keyboard touchpad. If you are viewing a list, youcan scroll through it by dragging up or down.

As withthe phone app, you should check what menu items appear under any sub menu key.

You canorganise the favourites tray, at the bottom of the illustration, with whichever five app shortcuts you prefer.

Picture 7 You can choose and drag any four or fiveicons to fill up your favourites tray, but the central appdrawer icon is sometimes static and can not be moved from its centralposition. No matter how many desktop screens you have, the favourites tray willbe identical on every screen.

Althoughicons can be shown individually in any position, you can create a folderof similar icons, by dragging one icon on top of another. On the left hand sideof the above illustration you can see a circular folder with one shortcutdragged on top of another to form a folder. You can dismantle the folder bysimply dragging out the icons one by one.

Preview - Google play store

Picture 15 There are around twenty online stores whereyou can download apps. The largest by far is the Google play app store. Everytime you read about how many apps Google has, the figure is different but itcould be up to 1 million.

Thechances of downloading malware on apps from the Google play store issignificantly less than using the more obscure sites and with such a big choiceand hundreds of thousands of them being free, there seems little incentive touse other sites.

GooglePlay apps fall into four main categories-

-Freewith full features.

-Fullfeature app, free for limited time for trial and then paidlicence to buy later.

-Initialdownload missing some extra features but free to use for lifeif you can live with reduced versatility. Pro version or similar can bepurchased later with full features.

-Topay in full before download as no free version is available.

It issometimes confusing as to whether any apparently free app you downloadwill be truly free for life and sometimes you only realiselaterthat it is a time limited versionand apayment has to be made.

Whenyou download for the first time any app, which needs an immediate payment, thePlay store will then invite you to store a credit card or similar so thatfuture app payments are automatic. If you have lodged a credit card at the timeyou created your Google play account, when signing in on your android device,it will simply use your existing details.
