The EverythingGuide to Social Media is an exceptionally well written and comprehensive guide to the social media space. I loved the engaging way it was written. It will help everyone even experts to know about new tools and websites out there. The book should be required reading in schools of education and for teachers everywhere, so they can easily use social media to enhance learning.
Esther Wojcicki, Chair of the Board, Creative Commons
Even the newest of newbies will benefit from this gentle yet enthusiastic introduction to the wide world of social media. John K. Waters explains that if you can run a web browser you can blog, twitter, use Facebook, post to MySpace, join LinkedIn, publish pictures, share videos, and even create an avatar in a virtual world.
Dr. Gary McGraw, author of Exploiting Online Games and CTO, Cigital
An approachable and comprehensive look at the social media services and tools that can be used by savvy individuals and businesses for fun and profit.
Michael Cot, IT industry analyst, RedMonk
John K. Waters has a remarkable ability to make what can be a dry, thick, plodding topic into an engaging, compelling, informative, and altogether enjoyable reading experience. He's done it again here.
Jeff Weinstock, Executive Editor, The Technology Horizons in Education Journal
Unless you've been asleep for the last five years, you know that social media has changed the landscape of the Internet. If you don't know where you're going or how to get there, this book will surely provide a foundation to help you get started.
Ronald Schmelzer, Founder, ZapThink
John's years of experience covering the software industry results in a book that accurately separates hype from reality and distills the essence of social media into a useful reference for digital newcomers and veteran developers alike.
Jeffrey S. Hammond, IT industry analyst, Forrester Research
The EverythingGuide to Social Media is the most complete, comprehensive, and easy to read book on the contemporary subject of social media. It provides a broad understanding of the concept, history, technology, and business aspects of all emerging social media systems and services. I strongly recommend it to be read by all IT administrators, technology enthusiasts, and students studying various aspects of new media and information technology.
Ali Jafari, Professor of Information Technology and Director of CyberLab, IUPUI
I'd like to dedicate this book to three people, who, in their own unique ways, made me want to write it: To Teresa Derichsweiler, early adopter, gadget lover, Internet trend spotter. It's great to have another addict in the neighborhood. To Larry Cohen, reluctant adopter, mocker of tech trends, devourer of blogs. It's great to have a skeptic there, too. And to Beverly Waters, my mother, whom I'm hoping, sincerely, will read this book and finally get online!
THE EVERYTHING GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA
Dear Reader,
I've been covering the high-tech beat from Silicon Valley for a variety of terrific trade publications for almost two decades, and I've loved every minute of it. But I haven't had as many opportunities to write for a main-stream audience as I would have liked. I mean, how many people not working in seriously techie jobs really care about things like the fate of the Java Platform now that Oracle Corporation owns Sun Microsystems, or the government's apparent failure to publish significant research on public key cryptography? Hands?
But it's pretty clear that average, non-techie folks care about social media, which involve many of the technologies that I've been writing about over the years. This stuff isn't rocket science, but it is a tangle of blogs and wikis and social networks and hyperlinks and hashtags and web browsers, all interacting and intermingling on the Internet. And it could use a bit of explaining, not to mention some context.
I've done my best to provide that here. What you have in your hands is a guide for beginners who'd like to participate in social media, but need a few road signs to get started; for veterans who could use a broader map of the social media landscape; and for anyone who feels lost in this unfamiliar territory and just wants to understand what everyone is talking about.
All the best,
