We would like to thank the authors for trusting us with their material. The financial support we have received from The Nordic Summer University, has allowed most of the contributors to meet at different conferences and enabled their papers to be proofread. Also thanks to Sidsel Ervo for technical assistance. And finally we praise the eminent work by our proofreader Rictor Norton, without whom this task would have been less manageable and the result less successful.
The article by Hans Bonde was earlier published in The Scandinavian Journal of History, vol. 21, 1996.
The article by Ella Johansson was earlier published in Gender & History, vol. 1, no. 2, Summer 1989.
The article by Helena Wahlstrm was earlier published in a slightly different form as a chapter within her Ph.D. thesis under her maiden name Helena Eriksson, Husbands, Lovers, and Dreamlovers: Masculinity and Female Desire in Womens Novels of the 1970s, Studia Anglistica Upsaliensis, Uppsala 1997.

MICHAEL KIMMEL
The study of men and masculinities has changed significantly in the past decade. Once, masculinity was as invisible as the air throughout the social and behavioral sciences, the unexamined norm, the social and the behavioral in the first place. So, studies of stratification could legitimately ask only of sons and fathers occupations and educational levels as measures of social mobility.
Feminism changed all that, of course, as women became visible as a gender, as a category of analysis. Then, we had a curious sort of mixture -one visible gender and one invisible norm against which women were measured. Finally, we discovered men. When social psychologists first discovered men they used sex role theory to describe the ways in which biological males and females were sorted, categorized, and socialized into their appropriate sex role. As had been the case when social psychologists had first explored womens experiences, differences between women and men were exaggerated by sex role theory, while differences among women and among men were downplayed.
