Intra-State Immigrants as Sub-State Nationalists
This book explores the attitudes, opinions and life experiences of first- and second-generation intra-state immigrants who are convinced and committed Basque nationalists. Based on in-depth interviews with activists, it challenges many of the assumptions often made about Basque nationalism as an exemplary case of ethnic nationalism in the exclusive sense. Focusing on activists migration history, their experiences of social and political inclusion and exclusion, their national and regional identities, their political identities and their experiences of political activism, the author explores the role of origins, identity and life experience in activists willingness to engage with Basque nationalism. As such, Intra-State Immigrants as Sub-State Nationalists will appeal to scholars of sociology and politics with interests in migration, national identities and nationalist movements.
Nick Hutcheon has studied and researched languages and nationalism at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Leeds, UK.

Wherever appropriate, Basque vocabulary and word forms are used throughout this book instead of the equivalent translations into Castilian, English and French. That policy is applied to place-names; Basque-specific cultural and political terms; adjectives and nouns referring to places and political terminology; and plural forms. There are Basque place-names that have an English-language version (e.g. Navarre); many that have a version in French (e.g. Saint Jean de Luz) and Spanish (e.g. Vitoria); and some which have a version in English, Euskara (Basque language), French and Spanish (e.g. Biscay/Bizkaia/Biscaye/Vizcaya). With few exceptions, neighbourhoods, towns, cities and provinces in the Basque Country have a version in Euskara. Therefore, lexical consistency is best achieved by using Basque place-names. Relatively recently created administrative entities, such as the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC), are referred to in English. Any mention of the Basque Country in the text refers to all seven Basque provinces (Araba, Bizkaia, Behe Nafarroa, Gipuzkoa, Lapurdi, Nafarroa and Zuberoa). However, since the geographical focus of this book is the four Basque provinces in the Spanish state (Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Nafarroa), it can be assumed that the reference is to that area only unless otherwise stated. To emphasise the relevance of a specific point to all seven Basque provinces, the text occasionally uses the term Euskal Herria. To make explicit reference to the provinces of Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Nafarroa, the English translation of the Basque term Hegoalde (the South), Southern Basque Country is used; to refer to the provinces of Behe Nafarroa, Lapurdi and Zuberoa, the English translation of the Basque term Iparralde (the North), Northern Basque Country is used. Basque nouns are used to describe people from specific towns, cities and provinces (e.g. a person from Bilbo is referred to using the Basque term
