1 A Wager on Hope
There is, perhaps, no more important topic in the social sciences than the study of intercultural communication. Understanding between members of different cultures was always important, but it has never been as important as it is now. Formerly, it was necessary for empire, or trade. Now it is a matter of the survival of our species.
We stand at the beginning of the global age in human affairs, and the development of our human powers to affect each other and the planet we share has been so rapid and so great that we threaten our own survival. Whatever the solutions to the problems created by our inventiveness and fecundity, they cannot be found or implemented unless we are able to create intercultural understanding and cooperation on a scale never before achieved. Only effective intercultural communication can enable us to achieve cooperation and understanding on a global scale.
