For most of our lives, we work hard, reaching for success, until we are faced with retirement. If you retire at age 65, you may think you have about 20 more years to relax and enjoy your life. But what if you had more time? What if you had another 40 or 50 years to live? Would it make a difference in how you lived? Ilchi Lee stresses that you can extend your life way beyond what most of us have accepted as our biological age limit, even up to 120 years. But the real question is, can we have not only a long life, but also a fulfilling one? Lees answer is a resounding yes, and it starts with the power of choice, a practice of self-reliance, and most importantly, a greater sense of purpose. A visionary and master teacher who globalized ancient Koreas mind-body tradition, Ilchi Lee lays out a clear path to a new paradigm of longevity and mastery of life. Through personal experience, compelling stories, the wisdom of an ancient Korean holistic practice, and current research on longevity and fulfillment, Lee shows readers how to live fully at any age without regrets.--From Amazon.com. Introduction

Embracing a New Humanity and a New Earth

C an you imagine yourself at age 120? Perhaps that idea caught your imagination when you read the title of this book, Ive Decided to Live 120 Years. You may already be accustomed to the idea that you might live to 90 or even 100, but 120 sounds quite absurd. So you may ask yourself, What secret fountain of youth has this author discovered?

But let me tell you bluntly: I do not have any magic pill that will guarantee that you or anyone else will live to be 120. I am currently in my late 60s, and I cannot even guarantee that I will live that long. However, I have decided to live to age 120.

The key word here is decided. I have made a clear, unwavering decision that I will live to 120 years of age. I cannot know when the actual final day of my life will come, but I do know that such a life is a possibility and that I can live my life with the expectation that I will live this long, especially if I take steps to live healthfully and with a deep sense of purpose. Biological research has shown that an individual humans cells hold the potential to function and replicate for 120 years, and maybe even longer if assisted by technologies now on the horizon. It is not at all unrealistic to live ones life with the expectation of living this long.

This book was conceived as I began to look back on my life as I entered my late 60s. I wondered what I wanted to plan to do with my remaining years. In my youth, I thought my life would essentially be over by age 60, since the average lifespan at the time was not very long, and 60 years was viewed as a considerable lifetime. But its a different story today. People routinely live 20 to 40 years longer than this. Yet, sadly, our cultures still function as though our lives are over by age 60 or 65, and many people over that age are left without a sense of purpose or passion. On top of that, most older people dont know how to maintain their health and vigor, robbing them of the ability to be proactive about their own lives.

Now that were living longer than ever before, everyone is trying to figure out how to live well in their later years. Were now experiencing a flood of advice for aging successfully from fitness companies, nutrient suppliers, books, the Internet, TV, and health gurus. But such advice is missing something, it seems to me. It lacks what I call spirit. I believe that the most important task in the second half of life is finding a purpose, one that will give the rest of our years meaning. The spirit that brings each moment vibrantly alive comes from such a purpose. Without it, living even to be 80 might feel boring and pointless.

I wrote this book thinking of readers over 40 who have started contemplating the latter half of their lives. But it can help anyone, regardless of age, who wants to have a meaningful, fulfilling life. After all, one thing is inescapable: we will all experience old age one day, unless we die tragically young. Planning for a fulfilling old age should be as normal as planning a career path or contributing to a retirement fund. Old age is the future that awaits everyone, and how you live now will have a tremendous effect on your final decades of life.
