This book is dedicated to my son,
Vincent Edward Eggleston,
for his wisdom as my teacher,
his persistence as a screenwriter, and
his goodness as human being
I met Georgena Eggleston in one of my workshops at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, in May 1998. She came into the workshop looking all put-together. However, her body was a bundle of raw nerves swimming in my hug! I sensed an overwhelming sadness and shame in her soma (body). Georgena introduced herself as a speech pathologist. As she spoke, this was obvious to all who were in the room.
I slowly guided the participants through a body-mind exercise. They all lay on the floor and followed my directions and my metaphors. Georgena struggled through all of this. She did her best, looking around at others for assurances that she was doing it right.
I ended the workshop a bit early because some people had to make a train. Georgena was very anxious that she would miss hers. I appreciated her anxiety about making connections home, and I gave her an especially long hug as she left. I knew that this person would be supported through her grief with the power of The Rubenfeld Synergy Method! (RSM is an integration of body, mind, emotions, and spirit)
As I predicted, Georgena became a trainee in my Rubenfeld Synergy Training program (RST). She was quick to volunteer for a Rubenfeld Synergy session and made her way to the table. At the end of the session, I gave her my honest and positive feedback. Your observational skills are validnot only for others, but for yourself. As I said this, my eyes, ears, and hands were releasing a great deal of trauma from her body and restoring a sense of confidence that grieving people rarely give to themselves. She named her Rubenfeld Synergy session Knee to Life, which provided her with the grounding that was so necessary. Georgena began to feel and trust her body as an ally through her grief.
In this book, Georgena has given you precious tools to heal yourself.
The exercises at the end of many chapters are simple and powerful.
They have been experienced personally by Georgena. Each chapter and exercise is a treasure! It has the potential of bringing you closer to your body and supporting you through your grief!
By asking a family member (or a friend) to assist, you will be offering them a unique opportunity to accompany you through your grief process.
Georgenas courage, self-disclosure, and life-changing discoveries are worth every tear for you as the reader. Her writing will move youit did me! If you have never experienced a loss that has brought you to your kneesread this book! This book will be your life-preserver when you experience a wave of grief! No one has to drown in grief again. The Body Tells The Truth, and it is a powerful way through grief into a new beginning.
This book is a must-read for every talk therapist and every Rubenfeld Synergist!
Ilana Rubenfeld, PhD
Creator of the Rubenfeld Synergy Method,
Author of The Listening Hand, published by
Bantam Press.
I was drowning in grief. My mind was like a top spinning with if only , why didnt I, and simply, why? I flailed as I resisted my feelings of overwhelming sadness and despair. Grief stabbed my left shoulder. I did not know that grief lives in ones body or that curiosity and self-care were tools to support me to move beyond my grief.
This book was written to share my voyage, bring grief to light, and share four powerful tools that support people on the inevitable journey through grief that awaits us all as human beings.
A short, quick read, the book is intended to support you, the reader. You may be a person deep in the vortex of grief, someone who wants to wisely bear witness to the grief of another, or a seeker looking ahead to the time when grief might descend upon the tapestry of your life. Or, you might be a professional therapist or Synergist who will provide this book as a resource to clients. Then again, you may be hoping to support a loved one who is grieving.
