Introduction
Do you know what the vagus nerve is? For most people, the vagus nerve is something that isnt studied in schools, nor is it actually discussed in much detail.
However, your vagus nerve provides stimulation to various organs within the body. It is an integral part of your nervous system. Its more than just the longest nerve in the body, its a nerve that helps control a multitude of functions.
But how can you control your vagus nerve? Thats what youre about to find out. In this book, well tackle some of the facts about vagus nerve stimulation you need to know, and why its so important.
I didnt know anything about the vagus nerve until recently. However, I have suffered from many different health conditions in life, several that were often almost too much for me to deal with. I started to do research into the vagus nerve, how it affects inflammation in the body and why it matters. I discovered so many important points, I would like to tell you about them.
I was someone who thought the vagus nerve was just another nerve. Boy, was I wrong! I learned what happens if your vagus nerve isnt properly stimulated, what happens if it is inactive, and how you can attribute many conditions to a non-functional vagus nerve.
I wrote this book to help you understand the different aspects of your vagus nerve, why it matters, and some important ways to aid vagus nerve stimulation, including how it will benefit you as a person, and how it can increase your health and wellness.
Chapter 1:
What Is the Vagus Nerve?
What is the vagus nerve?
Within our bodies, we have different nerves. There are nerves that extend from our brain called cranial nerves, and the vagus nerve is one of these 12 nerves.
However, its more than just that. Its not only one of the 12 cranial nerves, but its also the longest. The name comes from the Latin vagus nervus , meaning wandering nerve, since it tends to wander from our brain stem all through the organs in our chest cavity, abdomen, and our neck.
Now, whats in this area? Our lungs, digestive tract, and heart are all parts of our chest and abdominal cavity. The vagus nerve has a big responsibility and takes care of the vital functions of these different areas of the body.
It isnt just a giant nerve, its a nerve with a whole lot of responsibility.
Long Nerve, Lots of Jobs
The vagus nerve is responsible for your digestive, immune, respiratory, and cardiac systems. However, theres so much more to it than that. Its essentially a long nerve that helps the brain communicate with everything in the body, whether it be your heart rate, breathing, or other bodily functions.
There is a lot this nerve is responsible for and, for the most part, it takes care of the parasympathetic functions of the nervous system.
But what exactly does that entail? Read below to find out.
The Parasympathetic Functions
There are two parts of our autonomic nervous system: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. The vagus nerve controls the parasympathetic functions of our nervous system.
The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for all of the functions of our body when were stimulated and when we need to be on high alert.
Some of those functions include:
increasing your heartrate
gastrointestinal secretions
increasing breathing
pupil dilation
inflammation in the body
increasing your blood pressure
When you get injured, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in. Chances are youre scared, surprised, etc. Your sympathetic nervous system activates and suddenly you might notice a bruise swelling or that theres scabbing and puss forming. If you notice inflammation, thats a result of your sympathetic nervous system. Your blood pressure might increase as well.
However, your parasympathetic nervous system does the opposite of the sympathetic nervous system, which means its activated when the body is relaxed. When your vagus nerve is functioning correctly and you notice youre more relaxed, the following happens:
blood pressure decreases
heart rate lowers to its normal level
breathing becomes less labored and more even
neurotransmitters receive the signal to remove and reduce inflammation
pupils relax
the body naturally secretes gastrointestinal juices to help with digestion
the body calms down and is not as tense
Usually, the parasympathetic nervous system kicks in when youre relaxed or not on high alert. When youre presented with a stressful situation, the sympathetic nervous system goes on high alert.
Its More Than Just Your Heart and Lungs
The vagus nerve affects much more than the heart and lungs. It also impacts your sensory functions.
The vagus nerve is so long it extends to your ear canal, vocal cords, and underneath the tongue. Every time you stimulate it through these senses, it kicks in.
The vagus nerve handles the sensations you might feel in your ears, your throat, or even your mouth. When you sing, for example, it stimulates the vagus nerve, which takes care of everything thats happening.
