INTRODUCTION

Picture 8

T he vagus nerves origin is traced in the medulla oblongata of the brain stem, and it falls all the way down to the part of the colon. There are two vagus nerves, twin nerves if you prefer since all the nerves exist in pairs. One emerges from the right side of the medulla oblongata, and the other emerges from the left side; the health experts call them the left vagus nerve and the right vagus nerve. The vagus nerve carries bi-directional traffic, it transmits information from the body organs to the brain and from the brain to the organs back again, thus, creating the gut-brain axis. Several nuclei in the medulla oblongata are associated with the vagus nerve and the different types of information it carries. Those types are mentioned below:

1) The information about the touch, pain and the temperature travels down to the spinal trigeminal nucleus.

2) The sensory information from the internal organs or the visceral sensory information travels to the solitary nucleus.

3) The motor signals originate in the nucleus ambiguous and also the parasympathetic fibers that travel all the way to the heart.

4) The parasympathetic fibers emerge in the dorsal vagal motor nucleus.

The vagus nerve is responsible for the regulation of many critical aspects of human physiology, including heart rate, sweating, blood pressure, speaking, and digestion. This ubiquitous nerve plays a crucial part in controlling the muscles of the throat, the muscles of the voice box, and the immune system. The sources say that according to the latest research, this crucial nerve could be the missing piece of the puzzle, which could enable the treatment of chronic inflammation. It also could let wellness experts discover a cure for various incurable diseases. Sounds fantastic, right? Well, the vagus nerve is a life savior, and it also has more capabilities. You can learn how to unlock them in the chapters below.

CHAPTER 1
The Vagus Nerve and Decision-Making
Picture 12
Picture 13

S ome of the world's most successful people decided to skip one decision that people usually pay the most attention to - dressing. Take a look at Obama and Mark Zuckerberg. You'll see that they removed dressing out of their daily lives. They also have made sure to always have the same outfit in their wardrobe in multiple copies.

Decision making is stressful. That is because it is usually done under a constraint of time or more or less critical consequences. The evaluation of the ability to make decisions under these conditions has become a selection criterion in the business world. However, it is known that stress harms most cognitive functions and emotions, even several hours after it happened. As a consequence, it will cause difficulties in getting away from work and being able to rest.

The Connection Between Vagus Nerve And Decision-Making
Picture 17

T he vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve, and it is the main nerve branch of the parasympathetic system. This system is known to be involved in the modulation of stress. What interests us here is that the Vagus nerve is related to the areas of the brain involved in decision making and the regulation of emotions.

The activity of the vagus nerve can be correlated with a physiological parameter HRV for heart rate variation. HRV is the measure of the variation between heartbeats. This measure has been associated with the vegetative activity of the nervous system. Indirectly, this is how one can know the vagus nerve's behavior. Interestingly, HRV is also positively correlated with brain activity in the region related to decision making in the prefrontal cortex. Therefore, this correlation may indicate that the vagus nerve influences decision making.
