introduction
There exists a quality of character within the men and women of high achievement that separates them from the masses. This quality can infuse us with an enthusiasm that deters fatigue, a courage that emboldens our spirit, and a joyous sense of adventure for the life we have been blessed to captain. With this quality of character, we have the internal fortitude to build kingdoms; without it, we are hostage to our fears and weaknesses.
People may be born to privilegeand fail. Born to talentand flounder. Given opportunityand squander it. They may achieve material success, but without this precious quality their life will seem empty and hollow. What is this mysterious quality? It is married to every great enthusiasm, intertwined with our deepest desires. It goes hand in hand with every dream, every great love that we harbor, whether for a person, a business idea, or a cause that consumes our hearts and minds. It will carry us through our darkest moments, and lead us to our greatest victories. It is the defining quality that separates the good from the very best.
This quality is passion.
You have seen men and women who should have been overwhelmed by circumstanceand were not. Passion carried them through. You have seen companies threatened with bankruptcy, and the owner refused to concede defeat. Passion served as his armor. You have seen marriages threatened by illness, financial ruin, or self-destructionand yet they prevailed. Passion was the couples counselor. You have seen mothers and fathers lose their children to accident, sickness or violenceand rebound with vigor. Passion fueled their cause to find meaning in their loss and to take action to save others. Passion makes the difference in all of our pursuits, in each arena of our lives.
At The Power Within, we believe in living a life of passion. This book is a call to arms to every man and woman who believes as we do: life is meant to be lived fully and it is our privilege and responsibility to engage our talents and pursue those things that we hold dear. We each have the ability to create the life we desire.
As you are pursuing your dreams, we invite you to return to the words and ideas in the coming pages to remind you of the powers that already reside within your spirit, powers yet to be fully unleashed. We invite you to share your passion with the world.
You Already Have the Tools
It is not uncommon for high achievers to excel in one or more key areas of their life, while struggling to achieve success in others. This is to be expected. But you do not have to be confined by what defines others and what is considered average. You are not average. You know it by the simple fact that you are reading this work. Exceptional people invest time and energy in self-discovery and self-mastery, and the average person does not. It is true that success has or will come to you more easily in some areas than others, but with work, you can enjoy victory in every area of your life.
You already have the mark of success. There is something that defines and makes you remarkable. You have a genius in some area of your life. You have enjoyed victory in some endeavor. It can be as grand as building a $100-million company with your creativity, leadership and work, or as subtle as soothing the tension in a small home with your grace and good humor. It is also possible that you harbor a more rigid definition of success that only includes material wealth and career advancement; but success can be seen in a variety of hues, and we can create a multi-colored masterpiece of our lives.
You may have felt resigned to enjoying success in only one area of your life, having struggled to make positive changes before. You may have committed to your spouse that you would be home on time for dinner from now on, but your passion for work draws you like an inescapable magnet to stay late. You may have promised to make a change in your career and pursue something more in line with your interests and abilities, but your passion to be there for your kids after school leaves you feeling conflicted. In the past, translating success from one area into other areas in your life may have eluded you. If weve tried and failed before, what else can you do?
You have previously mastered many of the principles of success. You already know how to build a company, a marriage, a home, your portfolio, your body, or your volunteer cause. The same principles of success are transferable directly into other areas of your life, with passion as the catalyst. Passion is the missing ingredient. You need only to find the passion to further identify these principles and utilize them; then you will reap the rewards of the life you desire.
What is Passion?
What is most beautiful and sacred to you? What would you feel incomplete without? When you have identified that which brings you complete joy, your own unquenchable desire to achieve that goal will become your passionthe inner drive that turns your dreams into a shining reality.Author unknown
Passion is the internal experience and outward expression of our greatest possible love and enthusiasm. It fills us with focus, energy and determination. It is the fuel that allows us to complete the supreme journey. It is the fulcrum against which the largest mountains can be moved. It is the springboard from which all of our greatest accomplishments are launched. Passion is a deep love for something, whether a person, idea, company or cause. It is a love so intense, so consuming that it eradicates the normal barriers that may arise in our pursuits. Any obstacle that stumbles before the light of our true passion will soon face its demise.
Passion is evident in your thoughts, words and actions. It is revealed in your desire to accomplish a goal that is deeply rewarding. It is expressed through your resolve to finish what you have started, the spark in your eye from great excitement, the spring in your step from boundless energy, the magnetism in your words as you visualize the completion of your dreams and the conviction in your voice as you say, I mean to accomplish this!
With passion, all doors will eventually open before you; the gatekeepers on the other side will eventually tire. Passion is the fire that allows the hare to outlast the wolf. The wolf is running to catch his dinner, while the hare is running for his life. As long as your deepest passion is at the forefront of your mind, you will succeed in your endeavors. It cannot be a passing fancy, a mild interest, or even a strong concern: your passion must dominate your thoughts, govern every action and haunt you in your dreams.
When all of your thoughts, words and deeds are fully aligned with your mission, you are infused with an unquenchable energy. You erase from your mind any thoughts of sorrow, betrayal, sadness or loss. Instead, your thoughts are dominated with images of hope, victory and celebration. To live a life of passion means that you have embarked on a quest to fully satisfy your highest ambitions. It means that you will do so with a joyous and grateful spirit, and greet each day with vigor. Passion promises that you will be unstoppable.
