I was a wide-eyed twenty-one-year-old standing backstage at Live! With Regis and Kelly! I anxiously peeked out of the wings like a frightened clownfish as I waited for my cue to walk on stage. The final advertisement in the commercial break played on the video monitors above meABC insisted we didnt want to miss the series finale of Desperate Housewives that Sundayand my heart was pounding because as soon as the preview finished, Id be interviewed live in front of millions of people!

My mind raced as I mentally rehearsed all the talking points about the projects I was there to promote (a childrens book, a television show, LGBTQ+ rights, oh my!). The pressure was on and my harsh perfectionism did me zero favors. I convinced myself that if I messed up one wordjust one wordId never get asked on a talk show again.

Twenty seconds, a stagehand told me. Break a leg out there.

Thanks, I said, and nervously gulped.

By the way, dont be offended if Regis pronounces your name wrong, the stagehand added. We consider it a rite of passage.

Suddenly, I was distracted by someone moving out of the corner of my eye. I turned toward the movement and saw another stagehand escorting a pretty blond woman in a cheetah-print coat. The stagehand guided her to a discreet corner backstage and giddily gestured for all the surrounding crew members to be quiet.

Whos that? I asked.

Thats Char Margolis. The producers are sneaking her on the show after your segment.

Why?

Its Regiss final year so theyre surprising him with memorable guests.

Her name sounds familiar.

Shes a famous psychic-medium. The last time she was on the show she predicted Kellys pregnancy before she had told anyone. It was wild.

As if I werent stressed enough already, my whole body went stiff. I was terrified of psychics! Thanks to the books Id read and movies Id watched over the years I had unfairly associated all psychics, mediums, mystics, and clairvoyants with bad news. I instantly thought of the witches from Macbeth, Professor Trelawney from the Harry Potter series, Tangina Barrons from Poltergeist, and the damning prophecies they gave their stories protagonists.

Char sensed my fearful gaze and sent me a friendly wave. I quickly looked in the opposite direction and pretended I didnt notice her. We couldnt engage! What would I do if she gave me a grim prediction? What if she told me all the projects I was working on were going to fail? What if all that hard work was for nothing? I decided the best thing to do was avoid her at all costs. After all, no news is good news, right?

Holy smokes. Regis Philbin got my name right! The stagehand pulled open the curtain and the studio audience greeted me with a welcoming applause. I took a seat on the stool across from Regis and Kelly Ripa, and the interview began. It went wellat least, I think it went well. The adrenaline rush made it hard to focus, but I managed to promote all my projects and make a few jokes without spontaneously combusting or projectile vomitinga victory in my book.

The interview finished, the audience politely applauded, and the show went to another commercial break. I thanked Regis and Kelly profusely for having me, I waved goodbye to the crowd, and the stagehand escorted me backstage. I was so overwhelmed from the interview I completely forgot Char was hiding backstage until I walked directly past her. We made close eye contact and I gasped.

Great interview, honey, she said. You are so adorable.

Th-th-thanks, I stuttered.

Before I could respond, the stagehands ushered us apart, and like ships in the night, Char and I went our separate ways. Once I was back in my dressing room, I let out a long sigh of relief. I was thrilled the interview had gone smoothly, but even better, I was thankful I had encountered my first psychic without receiving any tragic news. However, Char had been so sweet and warm, I couldnt help wondering if my perception of herand of all psychics in generalwas misguided. Perhaps mediums werent so scary after all?

More than a year later, I was backstage at the Saban Theatre shooting an episode of the television show Glee. Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Sarah Jessica Parker, and I were sitting in our cast chairs waiting for a lighting setup. I stared at my phone screen for a good five minutes without moving a muscle. I was shocked! I was bewildered! I was spooked! It was such a profound coincidence I knew it was far more than just a coincidence. So, naturally, I emailed my publicist back and booked my very first psychic reading with Char.

As expected, I was absolutely terrified during our first session. I sat across from her and tightly clutched a pillow until my hands went numb.
