Freedom from your conditioning is possible, but the mind is a formidable opponent to freedom. It was designed to keep you thinking of yourself the way you do. Getting free requires a new way of thinking or, rather, not thinking. Healing our emotional selves entails changing our relationship to our mind and discovering our true nature. This book will help you do that. It will also help you reprogram your mind; clear negative thoughts and self-images; use meditation, prayer, forgiveness, and gratitude; work with spiritual forces to assist healing and clear negativity; and heal entrenched issues from the past. Exercises throughout provide an opportunity for practicing and integrating the information.

Suffering is inherent in the human condition, but freedom from suffering is possible. We are programmed to seeourselves as human, when in fact, our true nature is divine. How wesee ourselves is what needs to be healed. Our narrow identity as ahuman being keeps us tied to suffering and is the cause ofsuffering. To see ourselves as that which we are not is to live alie, and that lie can't lead to happiness. We are here to discoverwho we really are and claim the happiness that is natural to us asthe divine expressions of life that we are.

We all have a part to play in the evolutionof earth and of humanity, and it may require waking up out of theegoic trance and living from a greater truth. Before you can dothat, some healing may be necessary. This book was written to helpyou free yourself from any limiting beliefs. For that, it ishelpful to be open to the possibility that freedom from yourconditioning is possible in this lifetime. The belief that it isn'tpossible may be the biggest hurdle of all. Believe that you can befree and be willing to experience that.

This is a simple formula, but it isn't soeasy to apply because the mind is a formidable opponent to freedom. It was designed to keep you thinking of yourself the way you do.Getting free requires a new way of thinking or, rather, notthinking. To a large extent, healing our emotional selves is aboutchanging our relationship to our mind and discovering our truenature. This book will help you do that.

Getting free from your conditioning is notonly for your own happiness, but also for everyone else's becausewe are here to serve each other. Getting free is something we dofor all of humanity because humanity isn't separate from our owntrue self. Once the blocks to experiencing our true nature areremoved, we can share ourselves with the world in the unique waythat we were meant to.

Healing happens when we experience our trueself, but to do that we have to become very familiar with the falseself and its mistaken beliefs: Before we can discover what is trueand live as that, we first have to see what is false and stopbelieving it. This investigation is something only you can do foryourself, and it isn't always easy. This journey of discoverybegins as a solitary one that requires some effort and diligencebut ends in the experience of unity with all and true happiness. Itis a journey we all eventually take.

Why Healing Conditioning Is Necessary

Some conditioning is necessary. We need someof it to function, but we don't need all of it. Some of ourconditioning keeps us from being happy and finding fulfillment. That is the conditioning that needs healing or, at least, is bestignored. However, even this conditioning serves a purpose in ourevolution and growth.

As soon as we come into life, we beginacquiring conditioning. As soon as we are born, our parents andothers begin teaching us about life, either intentionally orunintentionally, and we take in what they teach us. Like a sponge,we absorb what we experience in our environment and learn from it.Some of what we are taught and what we learn is useful, necessary, and true (at least some of the time), but much of it is not.

Even before we have a capacity to understandlanguage, we learn from the environment. As infants, we drawcertain conclusions that may or may not be correct. Often they arenot correct. The conclusions we draw as infants and children areusually narrow representations of what is true about a situation, and these conclusions are often unconscious. For example, if as aninfant you were hooked up to tubes to keep you alive, you may haveconcluded that you are weak and powerless, or you may haveconcluded that the world is frightening and dangerous and that youare very vulnerable. You didn't realize that the tubes actuallyrepresented how much people loved you and valued your life. Yourconclusion actually didn't represent reality very fully ortruly.

Children, and to some extent adults, drawnegative or incorrect conclusions about their experience all thetime, and these conclusions determine how they respond to theirenvironment. These mistaken or narrow conclusions are part of ourconditioning, and they need healing because they interfere withresponding to life as it presents itself in each moment. Instead,we respond according to an idea (conditioning) from the past. Forexample, if an experience caused you to conclude that men withmustaches are mean, then when you encounter someone with amustache, you'll respond to him as if that were true. You will seemeanness even if it isn't there, and you might evoke or provoke itby your prejudicial attitude.

Most of us also have conditioning from ourprevious lifetimes that interferes in the same way, and thosemistaken beliefs also need healing. Conditioning from previouslifetimes operates just like conditioning acquired in the currentlife, and it is often more powerful. It may have been reinforcedover many lifetimes, or the experience that created it may havebeen so traumatic that the conclusions that were made as a resultof that trauma feel very true, even though they aren't true at all. This can be some of the most difficult conditioning to heal.

Much of our negative conditioning came fromoutside ourselves, that is, it was given to us by others and wasn'tthe result of conclusions we came to. When we are young, we believewhat we are told by our parents and others we are dependent on. Wetrust them to tell us the truth about the world and ourselves, andwe accept what they tell us as true. Unfortunately, much of whatthey tell us is either not true at all or only true some of thetime. When we are young, we aren't able to evaluate what we aretold, so if we are told to believe something or if others around usbelieve something, then that belief is incorporated into our beliefsystem until we are old enough to evaluate our beliefs ourselves.Still, some of our beliefs are never questioned, and many remainunconscious and outside our awareness, where they are safe fromscrutiny but still drive us in detrimental ways.
