He called it Authentic Confidence, and the process dramatically improved his career.

FOREWORD

I t took me 20 years of success and failure on the worlds largest stages to truly understand how confidence works. Its still very difficult for me to put into words. Ben Fauske does exactly that. His extensive studies and experience in this area are shared in this book and will provide a roadmap for your career. He addresses the confidence issues you didnt know you had.

To truly achieve Authentic Confidence, we must first accept the fact that we are all on a confidence journey. Ive come to realize that any success I enjoyed in athletics and business was less about my physical or genetic attributes and more about my mental process. When Ben shared his Authentic Confidence process with me, it all made sense. He explained the dangers of over and under confidence. I have seen these dangers firsthand. Finding the appropriate amount of confidence is critical for success.

This book is about teaching you how to find the confidence that people feel, without having to be told. It is the confidence that draws people in, doesnt push them away. It is the confidence that gives you the power to take responsibility for your actions. It is the confidence necessary to accomplish your dreams.

I met Ben at the Center for Exceptional Leadership at St. Norbert College. At the time, I was the director of product strategies, leading a billion-dollar category for global dairy provider, Schreiber Foods. Schreiber had been working with Ben for years adopting Authentic Confidence as a key process to develop talent. Hundreds of partners experienced the transformative coaching process provided in this book. The process works, and his mission to help leaders live and lead with confidence is obvious.

Confidence has been crucial to my progress as an athlete and leader. By the time I graduated high school, I had won nine national titles in three different styles of wrestling. At 19, I won a junior world title in Bucharest, Romania launching me onto the international scene. At 20, I became the youngest U.S. wrestler to ever make an Olympic team. Not only did I make the team; I won a bronze medal by beating a 5-time world champion from Russia.

After a second Olympics in Athens and several injuries, I was prematurely forced into retirement from wrestling at age 24. I spent the next year working through identity and confidence issues because I hadnt fully established who I was apart from wrestling. I needed to learn my strengths and weaknesses and determine what I would do next. At that point, I told myself that age 20 would not be the highlight of my career.

I decided my next adventure would be corporate leadership. I spent the next several years addressing my over and under confidence areas as my career progressed with Schreiber Foods. I have since acquired and built a multi-million-dollar portfolio of businesses. As these businesses evolve, I need to evolve as a leader. I do this by applying the Authentic Confidence process.

If you are interested in growing your influence or improving your culture, I recommend reading this book and applying the Authentic Confidence process.

CEO and Olympic Medalist

INTRODUCTION

W hy confidence? The topic is personal. My confidence issues used to be so bad that it led to recurring nightmares. During one nightmare, I was so terrified that I jumped out of bed and ran screaming into the other room. The problem is, before I made it to the other room, I ran face first into my dresser and it knocked me to the ground. Still half asleep, I felt blood running down my face. My wife woke me up and attempted to calm me down. I couldnt remember the details, but I knew these nightmares were not normal.

The previous day, I had gone for a walk. I had been struggling with my job for months and I was angry. I had already quit seven jobs in seven years, and I was about to quit number eight. I was fuming as I leaned into the arctic winds of Northeast Wisconsin. How could I keep ending up here? I vented to myself. I hated my work and couldnt handle my boss. I wondered if I were broken and couldnt be fixed. Maybe this was just my lot in life, to endure it.
