A ll people have an idea regarding their self-worth, although there are some who constantly deny that they do. Psychology defines self-esteem as the persons overall assessment of self-worth, self-respect, or self-value. Self-esteem is often viewed as a trait of a person that tends to be unwavering and lasting, but its not.

Your opinion regarding the kind of person you are, your appearance, emotions, behaviors, and beliefs all affect the way you value and feel about yourself thats self-esteem.

You need to understand that self-esteem is not unchanging and stationary, it can change slowly or abruptly it all depends on the situation and condition. Your view regarding your self-worth can change and has the possibility to always change in your lifetime due to different experiences and circumstances that you might encounter.

People with low self-esteem generally have negative beliefs. They tend to focus on their weaknesses and this only makes those beliefs stronger. As a result, their self confidence gets a hard blow. People with high self-esteem, on the other hand, view themselves in a positive light and they are confident in everything that they do. They take every challenge as a part of life and they see to it that they will be able to get back on their feet when they fail.

Take a look at two different cases of being rejected for a job or getting a negative review. A person with a low self-esteem will surely lose his or her confidence almost immediately and might take days or weeks to recover. If the same thing happens to a person with a high self-esteem he or she will only will regard the event as a challenge to do better, and swear to themselves that they would do better next time. A person with low self-esteem might not have the confidence to try again.

Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence, Closely Related But Not the Same

Most people use the words self-esteem and self-confidence interchangeably when defining what a person feels about him or herself. Although at first glance they might look the same, understand that they are two separate concepts that can depend on each other.

Self-esteem is the one that gives a person a positive or negative regards to himself. We will discuss later in this book how a person gets a negative or positive self-esteem.

Self-confidence is how a person feels about his own abilities and it can vary from one situation to the next.

Take for instance a math genius who has a fear of speaking in front of people but he still needs to showcase his skills to the public. Although the person might be intelligent, he has not developed his social skills to meet people; he has low self-esteem but his self-confidence that he can do complex mathematical equations is high. He knows that he will be able to explain things without any flaw, the only problem is that he does not know how.

There is also this person who has oozing self-esteem but not quite good with numbers. He might be able to make public appearances with success but he is not confident enough to explain certain equations or anything that has something to do with numbers. This will still yield a dilemma.

Self-esteem and self-confidence should go hand in hand. They are not the same entities but separate ones that can help you mold your personality and be the person you deserve to be.

If you are someone with low self-esteem and low self-confidence to go along with it, then you have a huge problem. You might always have that certain urge to bury your head to the ground just to make it through the day. You might even refuse to go out of your house, mingle with friends and family, or do anything for fear that you might do something wrong again. Well, you dont need to be like that anymore because there are ways to boost your self-esteem as well as your confidence and shutting yourself in your room is not one of them.

This book will help you boost your self-esteem and will make you very confident in dealing with anything that life throws at you. Gone are the days when all you can do is mope and shy away from the light. It is time to change; it is time to finally shine.
